Studying the Bible: The Tanakh and Early Christian Writings is a university-level, textbook introduction to the study of the Bible, its literary forms, and historical and cultural contexts. This textbook is a companion to the Bible courses taught in the English Department at Kansas State University, in particular ENGL 470 The Bible, though it is available for use in other courses and contexts. This textbook examines the Hebrew Bible (also known as the Tanakh) and the early Christian writings of the New Testament. It is an introduction to the analysis of biblical texts, their histories, and their interpretations. The emphasis throughout this textbook is on the literary qualities of these biblical texts as well as their cultural and historical contexts.

L'ouvrage publié en l'honneur de Francis Messner réunit trente contributions, rédigées par ses collègues et amis. Celles-ci rendent hommage aux trois grands champs d'étude qui ont constitué l'essentiel de l'activité scientifique du récipiendaire : le droit des religions, le droit canonique et les relations Églises-États. Directeur de recherche émérite au CNRS et professeur conventionné à l'Université de Strasbourg, Francis Messner a été particulièrement soucieux de donner une convergence scientifique aux trois thèmes qui furent au cœur de sa réflexion tout au long de sa carrière : la société, le droit et la religion. Ses études des droits internes des religions, du droit français et comparé des religions ainsi que des relations Églises-États en France comme en Europe, l'élevèrent au statut d'expert reconnu au niveau national et international et marquèrent, par leur approche pluridisciplinaire, toutes les branches du droit des religions. Le Traité de droit français des religions, dont il a codirigé la publication, représente l'une des très nombreuses manifestations de la dynamique qu'il initia dans ce domaine. Le caractère international de ces mélanges, rédigés par des spécialistes français et européens, constitue à la fois un juste hommage et un témoignage de profonde reconnaissance au chercheur qui a toujours su allier à une rigueur scientifique irréprochable de grandes qualités humaines.

"Religion in the ancient world, and ancient Egyptian religion in particular, is often perceived as static, hierarchically organised, and centred on priests, tombs, and temples. Engagement with archaeological and textual evidence dispels these beguiling if superficial narratives, however. Individuals and groups continuously shaped their environments, and were shaped by them in turn. This volume explores the ways in which this adaptation, negotiation, and reconstruction of religious understandings took place. The material results of these processes are termed 'cultural geography'. The volume examines this 'cultural geography' through the study of three vectors of religious agency: religious practices, the transmission of texts and images, and the study of religious landscapes" -- page 4 of cover.
