The Ostraca House in Abu Mena is a medium-sized multi-story building, which was badly destroyed by fire after the Arab conquest of Egypt (at around 639/42). Despite being used by neighboring inhabitants as landfill, it led archeologists to the discovery of nearly 2000 Greek ostraca. In this volume Peter Grossmann examines the origins of these ostraca. The house was an official building owned privately and not by the state, which had, among other things, something to do with the organization of the grape harvest and the payment of grape pickers in the surrounding vineyards. In addition, there was a larger abutting complex of buildings in the immediate vicinity of the building, with five closely-packed presses built at different times, which would suggest that it makes sense to link the excavated ostraca to the existence of these presses. These are the only presses that were allowed to remain under Roman control within the holy precinct (temenos), which suggests that they were, in part at least, private ecclesiastical possessions. This is also confirmed by the fact that the ostraca are written exclusively in Greek.

"The Queer Tree of Life maps the landscape of queer LGBTQ publishing between 1880 and 2019 in an international context. Over 400 examples document the wealth of ideas in print of a culture that was clandestine until the 1970s. The selected examples focus on identity and image constructions of queer lifestyles. Fanzines, self-publishing, academic discourse, research, porn, and artist books are presented as pioneers of a non-heteronormative self-understanding."--

Between 1970 and 1980, the Detroit Printing Co-op, spearheaded by Fredy and Lorraine Perlman, was responsible for the first English translation of Guy Debord's Society of the Spectacle, printed journals like SDS' Radical America, ultra-left books by their in-house press, Black & Red, and countless posters, pamphlets, and books printed by high school students, black radicals, labor organizers, and anarchists who made use of the freely available facilities at the Co-op. Fredy Perlman was not a printer or a designer by training, but was deeply engaged in the ideas, issues, processes, and materiality of printing. While at the Detroit Printing Co-op, he rethought the possibilities of prit by experimenting with overprinting, collage techniques, and different kinds of papers. Behind the calls to action and class consciousness written in his publications, there was an innate sense of the politics of design, experimentation, and pride of craft. "The Detroit Printing Co-op" is a timely exploration of the history, output, and legacy of this unique enterprise, and serves as a testament to the power of printing, publishing, design, and distribution.

The early modern European book world was confronted with many crises and controversies. Some conflicts were of such monumental scale that they wrought significant reconfigurations of the trade. Others were more quotidian in nature – evidence of the intensely competitive and at times predatory nature of the industry. How publishing negotiated and responded to the various crises, conflicts and disputes of the age is explored by the rich and varied interdisciplinary contributions in this volume. To succeed in the business of books, printers and publishers needed to seize the advantage in the often complex environments in which they operated. What was required was determination, resilience, and inventiveness, even in the most challenging of times.
