Comme son nom l’indique, la sculpture hyperréaliste cherche à imiter les formes, les contours et les textures du corps humain afin d’en offrir une illusion parfaite. Grâce à la précision technique mise au service de la reproduction fidèle du moindre détail, nous avons le sentiment de nous trouver en présence d’une réplique exacte de la réalité.En sculpture, l’hyperréalisme voit le jour dans les années 1960 en réaction à l’esthétique dominante de l’art abstrait, à l’instar du Pop Art et du photoréalisme. Aux États-Unis, où le mouvement est apparu en premier, des artistes tels que Duane Hanson, John DeAndrea et George Segal se tournent vers une représentation réaliste du corps, une voie considérée depuis longtemps comme désuète et dépassée. En utilisant des techniques traditionnelles telles que le modelage, le moulage et l’application polychrome de peinture à la surface de leurs sculptures, ces pionniers vont créer une imagerie humaine saisissante de vérisme. Les générations suivantes d'artistes vont poursuivre dans cette voie, tout en développant leur propre langage.

Ziehier een onwaarschijnlijk boek, waarin we kennis maken met bevindingen van veertig kunstenaars. Het werd geschreven door een twintigste-eeuws filosoof die vijfendertig jaar lang samenwerkte en uitvoerig sprak met alle vooraanstaande, maar ook heel jonge of minder bekende kunstenaars, benieuwd naar de manier waarop hun werk ontstaat en zich ontwikkelt. Alle gesprekken werden nagelezen door de kunstenaars of hun nabestaanden. Moeilijke of lege woorden zal u in dit boek niet aantreffen en als sommige zinnen te lang zijn, staat het u vrij ze in stukjes te knippen. Traag maar onstuitbaar ontvouwt zich voor de ogen van de lezer een groots landschap van talloze vormelijke mogelijkheden, die ons ontroeren door hun innige verbondenheid met de manier van kijken, zijn en handelen van de kunstenaars. This publication assembles essays, statements, interviews, letters, poems, and other kinds of texts by artists from all around the world on the various concepts of sculpture from 1990 to the present. Illustrations of the contributing artists’ works show the multiple facets and diversity of contemporary sculpture. In three lengthy chapters and a brief introduction, the book presents works of sculpture, the processes used to create them, different kinds of figuration, and exhibition venues for contemporary sculpture. Intended for a broad audience of artists, curators, art historians, students, and art lovers, this volume is being produced by the Anthony Cragg Foundation for the Waldfrieden Sculpture Park in Wuppertal and serves both as an important reference book as well as a source of inspiration.
