The Cambridge Dictionary of Linguistics provides concise and clear definitions of all the terms any undergraduate or graduate student is likely to encounter in the study of linguistics and English language or in other degrees involving linguistics, such as modern languages, media studies and translation. lt covers the key areas of syntax, morphology, phonology, phonetics, semantics and pragmatics but also contains terms from discourse analysis, stylistics, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics and corpus linguistics. It provides entries for 246 languages, including 'major' languages and languages regularly mentioned in research papers and textbooks. Features include cross-referencing between entries and extended entries on some terms. Where appropriate, entries contain illustrative examples from English and other languages and many provide etymologies bringing out the metaphors lying behind the technical terms. Also available is an electronic version of the dictionary which includes 'clickable' cross-referencing.

This book deals with two research fields and brings them together: contrastive linguistics and third language acquisition. The book describes the following linguistic structures in Dutch and Swedish from a contrastive perspective: spatial adverbs, copula, impersonal passives, impersonal constructions and finally the posture verbs stand, zit and lie. Dutch and Swedish are usually acquired as a third language and not as a second language, which implies that learners already comprehend various other languages. When learning a language these multilingual learners have developed certain strategies which draw on their competence in earlier studied languages. In the process of learning a third language, metalinguistic and cross-linguistic awareness play an important role. Comparing linguistic structures in two closely related languages as Dutch and Swedish can enhance cross-linguistic awareness and therefore be used as a didactic tool.

Anotace Publikace představuje příspěvky z vědecké konference, které se 14. 3. 2019 účastnili posluchači magisterského a doktorského studia. Jazykovou komunikací se zabývá příspěvek Kateřiny Žvakové (Prostředky komunikační strategie účinkujících v pořadu GEN), didaktickým využitím reklamy příspěvek Pavlíny Zouharové (Reklama v učivu českého jazyka na 2. stupni ZŠ). S výukou žáků s odlišným mateřským jazykem souvisejí příspěvky Radima Ošmery (Zvuková stránka češtiny nerodilých mluvčích), Veroniky Tinkové (Pracovní listy pro výuku českého jazyka bilingvních žáků 6.-9. třídy) a Věry Šimkové (Adaptovaná četba v českém prostředí). Na dětského diváka je zaměřen příspěvek Miroslava Jindry (Metodologie výzkumu dětského divadelního publika na příkladu inscenace Vinnetou), sborník uzavírají literárněvědné příspěvky Kateřiny Tesařové (Motivy smrti v básnických prvotinách Jiřího Karáska ze Lvovic a J. H. Krchovského) a Ondřeje Pechníka (Obraz izraelsko-palestinského konfliktu v díle Tomáše Kolského).
