Abstract

From small-scale thermal properties to large-scale forestry, territorial, and carbon cycle issues, wood has latent propensities not well addressed in the current discourse on wood construction. Through a range of design research formats, from material testing to in-situ documentation to speculative urban projects, this book articulates and illustrates future architectural and ecological potentials of wood. From under-considered thermal properties to emerging manufacturing possibilities to forestry regimes to larger ecosystem and carbon cycle dynamics, wood is uniquely positioned for ecological urbanization in the twenty-first century yet remains inadequately characterized in architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism. As the unique material properties of wood operate at multiple, simultaneous spatial and temporal scales, so should the discussions surrounding wood's role as a critical material for design today. This book brings into conversation scholars and practitioners who focus on wood from a range of perspectives, from the working forest to the mid-rise building to the cell itself. The aim is to examine the implications and potentials of wood urbanism, drawing particular focus to the complex relationships between land-use, wood production, and wood construction. While relying on the inherent intelligence and depth of multiple disciplines, a more totalizing thermodynamic perspective on the role of wood in contemporary buildings, urbanization, and territories is needed: from the imperceptibly small to the confoundingly large.

Abstract

Advances in the materials and the digitalization of architecture bring about new methods in design and construction. Whereas traditional timber construction consists of pre-cut and pre-assembled timber sections, modern timber buildings today consist of elaborate wood-based materials. Owing to their flexibility and good properties in terms of building physics and ecology, these wood-based materials are ideal for computer-aided building component production. Fifteen case examples from research, teaching, and practical applications provide inspiring insights into the potential of formable wood-based materials and digital design: Woven Wood, Wood Foam, Living Wood and Organic Joints, Timber Joints for Robotic Building Processes, Efficiencies of Wood, Designing with Tree Form. 15 Fallbeispiele aus Praxis, Lehre und Forschung liefern inspirierende Einblicke in das Potenzial formbarer Holzwerkstoffe und digitaler Entwurfspraxis: Woven Wood, Wood Foam, Living Wood and Organic Joints, Timber Joints for Robotic Building Processes, Efficiencies of Wood, Designing with Tree Form.

Abstract

Vo Trong Nghia heads a leading architecture firm in Vietnam. Following his training in Japan, the architect returned to his home country with the humble ambition of preserving its essential landscapes in the face of booming urban development and prosperity. Peaceful forms in dialogue with the environment, pavilions of exact geometry and vernacular inspiration, and light structures where bamboo replaces steel are typical of his work. VTN Architects explores various paths in terms of form and technique, yet with the common pursuit of sustainability and an active social agenda, wherein vegetation also takes a central role. Fifteen works and three prototypes are featured in this volume.

Abstract

Ongoing urbanisation requires rapid, low-emission construction methods. Architects, investors and politicians are on the hunt for housing solutions that are fast and cost-effective, yet sustainable and flexible. Timber room modules meet all of these requirements: flexibility, variability, low construction and operating costs, short construction times thanks to high rates of prefabrication, a pleasant living environment, easy dismantling via detachable connections, excellent recyclability as well as a general acceptance by end users. This practical volume offers an overview, from the planning process to assembly, while contemporary examples show that building with room modules facilitates heretofore unimagined, multi-layered and differentiated architectures.
