"This landmark volume presents the latest research on language, literacy and numeracy, cognition, and social and emotional development of deaf learners by internationally-recognized researchers and practitioners. Chapters focus on the translation of research into evidence-based teaching practices in deaf education and thus the improvement of student outcomes through professional development for teachers"-- This volume presents the latest research from internationally recognized researchers and practitioners on language, literacy and numeracy, cognition, and social and emotional development of deaf learners. In their contributions, authors sketch the backgrounds and contexts of their research, take interdisciplinary perspectives in merging their own research results with outcomes of relevant research of others, and examine the consequences and future directions for teachers and teaching. Focusing on the topic of transforming state-of-the-art research into teaching practices in deaf education, the volume addresses how we can improve outcomes of deaf education through professional development of teachers, the construction and implementation of evidence-based teaching practices, and consideration of "the whole child," thus emphasizing the importance of integrative, interdisciplinary approaches. -- Provided by publisher.

The Auditory Brain and Age-Related Hearing Impairment provides an overview of the interaction between age-related hearing impairments and cognitive brain function. This monograph elucidates the techniques used in the connectome and other brain-network studies based on electrophysiological methods. Discussions of the manifestations of age-related hearing impairment, the causes of degradation of sound processing, compensatory changes in the human brain, and rehabilitation and intervention are included. There is currently a surge in content on aging and hearing loss, the benefits of hearing aids and implants, and the correlation between hearing loss, cognitive decline and early onset of dementia. Given the changing demographics, treatment of age-related hearing impairment need not just be bottom-up (i.e., by amplification and/or cochlear implantation), but also top-down by addressing the impact of the changing brain on communication. The role of age-related capacity for audio-visual integration and its role in assisting treatment have only recently been investigated, thus this area needs more attention.--

In the past, pastoral care with the deaf generally took place from the care perspective of hearing pastors: deafness as a disability that deserved charity and a missionary effort towards integration of deaf people into a hearing society. This book proposes a liberatory pastoral model that starts from deaf people's self-experience, Deaf Cultures, and Sign Language as deaf people's most natural language: deafness as a way of life. In a deaf way of life, deafness is not an impairment or disability, but a world in its own worth. In this Deaf World deaf people are not passive receivers of pastoral ministry, but its primary agents. Topics treated in this book are: the history of deafness in Western culture, deaf people's self-experience, a non-dichotomizing view on "impairment," a theological view on language, the deaf community as locus theologicus, and Bible translation into Sign Language.

This book presents the first ever comprehensive overview of national laws recognising sign languages, the impacts they have and the advocacy campaigns which led to their creation. It comprises 18 studies from communities across Europe, the US, South America, Asia and New Zealand. They set sign language legislation within the national context of language policies in each country and show patterns of intersection between language ideologies, public policy and deaf communities’ discourses. The chapters are grounded in a collaborative writing approach between deaf and hearing scholars and activists involved in legislative campaigns. Each one describes a deaf community’s expectations and hopes for legal recognition and the type of sign language legislation achieved. The chapters also discuss the strategies used in achieving the passage of the legislation, as well as an account of barriers confronted and surmounted (or not) in the legislative process. The book will be of interest to language activists in the fields of sign language and other minority languages, policymakers and researchers in deaf studies, sign linguistics, sociolinguistics, human rights law and applied linguistics.

In his memoir, David Sorensen explores his identity as a coda, or a child of Deaf adults. He describes his experiences with the roles often placed on codas at a young age, such as interpreter, confidant, and decision-maker. His story reveals a person seeking acceptance and belonging while straddling the Deaf and hearing worlds, and shows how he found reconciliation within himself and with both worlds. Sorensen relays the dynamics of his family life; he had a strained relationship with his father, who was an active leader and role model in the Deaf community and the Mormon Church, yet struggled to bond with his own son. Sorensen rebelled as a youth and left home as a teenager, completely detaching from the Deaf community. After struggling to establish himself as an independent adult, he discovered that he wanted to return to the Deaf world and use his ASL fluency and cultural understanding as a mental health therapist and community advocate. Now he considers himself an ambassador between the Deaf and hearing worlds, as well as between the older and younger generations of Deaf people. Between Two Worlds: My Life as a Child of Deaf Adults shares the unique experiences of a coda and passes on the rich cultural past shared by the American Deaf community.
