Abstract

"The book discusses how the extraction of fossil fuels affects the rituals and artifacts of people's daily lives. The author asks readers to view fossil fuels as an intellectually intriguing topic rather than one better left to engineers. At the core of the book is the argument that energy consumption severs consumers from the production of carboniferous fuels and the waste they create. The book will interest scholars of American studies and environmental history"--

Abstract

This book sheds light on environmental control in buildings from the 17th century onwards. Even before building services became a hallmark of buildings, in order to address increasing sanitary and comfort needs, pioneering experiences had contributed to improve design skills of professionals. After long being determined by passive features, indoor climate became influenced by installations and plants, representing the most significant shift of paradigm in the modern age’s construction history. This change was not without consequences, and the book presents contributions showing the deep connection between architectural design, comfort requirements and environmental awareness throughout the 19th century. Taking into account the differences between different European countries, the book is a valuable resource for architects, designers and heritage professionals who are interested in environmental design, enabling them to develop a deeper knowledge of heritage in order to address to climate demands, particularly going towards a future in which energy savings and fuel consumption reduction will dictate our behaviour. It includes contributions by leading international experts: Melanie Bauernfeind, Marco Cofani, Lino Vittorio Bozzetto, Emmanuelle Gallo, Alberto Grimoldi, Dean Hawkes, Angelo Giuseppe Landi, Mattias Legnér, Oriel Prizeman, and Henrik Schoenefeldt.

Abstract

This book discusses dynamic modeling, simulation, and control strategies for Photovoltaic (PV) stand-alone systems during variation of environmental conditions. Moreover, the effectiveness of the implemented Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) techniques and the employed control strategy are evaluated during variations of solar irradiance and cell temperature. The simulation results are based on the reliability of the MPPT techniques applied in extracting the maximum power from the PV system during the rapid variation of the environmental conditions. The authors review two MPPT techniques implemented in PV systems, namely the perturb and observe (P&O) MPPT Technique and the Incremental Conductance (InCond) MPPT technique. These two MPPT techniques were simulated by the MATLAB/Simulink and the results response of the PV array from voltage, current, and power are compared to the effect of solar irradiation and temperature change. Discusses dynamic modeling, simulation, and control strategy of PV stand-alone systems during variation of the environmental conditions; Evaluates the effectiveness of the implemented Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) techniques and the employed control strategy, during variations of solar irradiance and the cell temperature; Simulates two MPPT techniques using MATLAB/Simulink and compares the response of the PV array from voltage, current, and power to the effect of solar irradiation and temperature change; Describes an efficient control strategy to enhance the Battery-Supercapacitor Hybrid Energy Storage System (BS-HESS), appropriate for PV stand-alone systems.

Abstract

"Inequality and Energy: How Extremes of Wealth and Poverty in High Income Countries Affect CO2 Emissions and Access to Energy challenges energy consumption researchers in developed countries to reorient their research frameworks to include the effects of economic inequality within the scope of their investigations, and calls for a new set of paradigms for energy consumption research. The book explores concrete examples of energy deprivation due to inequality, and provides conceptual tools to explore this in relation to other issues regarding energy consumption. It thereby urges that energy consumption approaches be updated for a world of increasing inequality. Extreme economic inequality has increased within developed countries over the past three decades. The effects of inequality are now seen increasingly in health, housing affordability, crime and social cohesion. There are signs it may even threaten democracy. Researchers are also exploring its effects on energy consumption. One of their key findings is that less privileged groups have lost consistent access to basic energy services like warm homes and affordable transport, leading to huge disparities of climate damaging emissions between rich and poor"--

Abstract

After the discovery of oil in the 1930s, the Gulf monarchies-Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Bahrain-went from being among the world's poorest and most isolated places to some of its most ostentatiously wealthy. To maintain support, the ruling sheikhs provide their subjects with boundless cheap energy, unwittingly leading to some of the highest consumption rates on earth. Today, as summertime temperatures set new records, the Gulf's rulers find themselves caught in a dilemma: can they curb their profligacy without jeopardizing the survival of some of the world's last absolute monarchies? In Energy Kingdoms, Jim Krane takes readers inside these monarchies to consider their conundrum. He traces the history of the Gulf states' energy use and policies, looking in particular at how energy subsidies have distorted demand. Oil exports are the lifeblood of their political-economic systems-and the basis of their strategic importance-but domestic consumption has begun eating into exports while climate change threatens to render their desert region uninhabitable. At risk are the sheikhdoms' way of life, their relations with their Western protectors, and their political stability in a chaotic region. Backed by rich fieldwork and deep knowledge of the region, Krane expertly lays out the hard choices that Gulf leaders face to keep their states viable.

Abstract

The aim of the book is to improve conventional building design in Southeast Europe. This is done with proposing conceptual guidelines for designing energy-efficient buildings for different geographic regions of Serbia. The focus is on climate-appropriate design of building envelopes. To adress sustainability, economical, environmental and social aspects are evaluated. The body is divided into three main chapters: traditional houses, the existing housing stock, and design patterns for future buildings. The conclusions and the methodology can be applied in the rest of Southeast Europe, since Serbia has a unique position in the middle of the region, covering different geographical areas that spread far out of Serbia’s borders. Contents Introduction - Traditional Homes - Refurbishing Existing Building Stock - Future Housing Designs - Conclusion Audience Students and Researcher focusing on energy-efficiency, Professionals working on building projects in Southeast Europe Author Dr. techn. Vladimir Jovanović, Architect with a focus on energy-efficient and sustainable building design.
