This edited volume explores the use of technology to enable us to visualise the life sciences in a more meaningful and engaging way. It will enable those interested in visualisation techniques to gain a better understanding of the applications that can be used in visualisation, imaging and analysis, education, engagement and training. The reader will be able to explore the utilisation of technologies from a number of fields to enable an engaging and meaningful visual representation of the biomedical sciences, with a focus in this volume related to anatomy, and clinically applied scenarios. The first four chapters highlight the diverse uses of CT and MRI scanning. These chapters demonstrate the uses of modern scanning techniques currently in use both clinically and in research and include vascular modelling, uses of the stereoscopic model, MRI in neurovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, and how they can also be used in a forensic setting in identification. The remaining six chapters truly demonstrate the diversity technology has in education, training and patient engagement. Multimodal technologies are discussed and include art and history collections, photogrammetry and games engines, augmented reality and review of the current literature for patient rehabilitation and education of the health professions. These chapters really do provide “something for everyone” whether you are a student, faculty member, or part of our curious global population interested in technology and healthcare. .

This edited book explores the use of technology to enable us to visualise the life sciences in a more meaningful and engaging way. The first five chapters examine a range of tools and technologies that can be used in anatomical, medical and bioscience education. This includes screencasting and video for anatomical education; the role of xR visualisations, virtual patients, student centred online e-resources and MOOCs and what the current and future trends in this field are. The sixth and seventh chapters examine ways to utilise technologies in digital reconstruction, visualisation and anatomical examination to enhance understanding of structures and their relations. The final three chapters detail how to use technology in engaging patients and the wider public. The first of these chapters discusses a workflow methodology that can be used to create an interactive app for patient’s newly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and demonstrates how this can be applied to different clinical scenarios. The penultimate chapter shows how an augmented reality tool can be used to educate children about skeletal anatomy and broken bones. The final chapter highlights how technology can be used to engage the public in bioscience education.

The volume offers a fundamental knowledgein modeling in vitro tissues/organs as an alternative to 2D cell culture and animal testing. Prior to engineering in vitro tissues/organs,the descriptions of prerequisites (from pre-processing to post-processing) in modeling in vitro tissues/organs are discussed. The most prevalent technologies that have been widely used for establishing the in vitro tissue/organ models are also described, including transwell, cell spheroids/sheets, organoids, and microfluidic-based chips. In particular, the authors focus on 3D bioprintingin vitro tissue/organ models using tissue-specific bioinks. Several representative bioprinting methods and conventional bioinks are introduced. As a bioink source, decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) are importantly covered, including decellularization methods, evaluation methods for demonstrating successful decellularization, and material safety. Taken together, the authors delineate various application examples of 3D bioprintedin vitro tissue/organ models especially using dECM bioinks. This book may provide an introductory guide for modeling in vitro tissues/organs and for opening up agate for beginnersincluding teachers and undergraduate/graduate students. -Provides strategic insight into the biofabrication of in vitro tissues and organs; -Introduces 3D cell-printing techniques and dECM-based bioinks; -Includes examples of 3D cell printed in vitro tissues/organs.

This book covers all aspects of head-related transfer function (HRTF), from the fundamentals through to the latest applications, such as 3D sound systems. An introductory chapter defines HRTF, describes the coordinate system used in the book, and presents the most recent research achievements in the field. HRTF and sound localization in the horizontal and median planes are then explained, followed by discussion of individual differences in HRTF, solutions to this individuality (personalization of HRTF), and methods of sound image control for an arbitrary 3D direction, encompassing both classic theory and state of the art data. The relations between HRTF and sound image distance and between HRTF and speech intelligibility are fully explored, and measurement and signal processing methods for HRTF are examined in depth. Here, supplementary material is provided to enable readers to measure and analyze HRTF by themselves. In addition, some typical HRTF databases are compared. The final two chapters are devoted to the principles and applications of acoustic virtual reality. This clearly written book will be ideal for all who wish to learn about HRTF and how to use it in their research. .

This book discusses in detail the structural, evolutionary and functional role of actin and its regulatory proteins in gliding motility in apicomplexan organisms, a unique phenomenon found in actin-myosin cytoskeletal elements. The book also explores the potential of different actin regulators, namely formin, profilin, actin depolymerization factor (ADF), capping proteins (CPα and CPβ), cyclase-associated protein (CAP) and coronin 13–24 as potential drug targets against malaria. As the chief components of the gliding motor, the actin-regulator proteins are characterized by unique features that make them promising targets for structure-based drug design. Lastly, the book proposes a mathematical model, based on kinetic data mining, to help understand the most vital regulators for actin polymerization dynamics.
