There is no modern commentary on the whole of Valerius Maximus' Facta et dicta memorabilia, though commentaries on books 1 and 2 have been published by, respectively, David Wardle (1998) and Andrea Themann-Steinke. Progress is likely to be made by further commentaries on individual books and John Briscoe contributes to this with a commentary on Book 8, of particular interest because of the variegated nature of its subject matter. The commentary, like those of Briscoe's commentaries on Livy Books 31-45 (OUP, 1973-2012), deals with matters of content, textual issues, language and style, and literary aspects. An ample introduction discusses what is known about the author, the time of writing, the structure both of the work as a whole and of Book 8 itself, Valerius' sources, language and style, the transmission of the text, editions of Valerius, and the methods of citation used in the commentary. The commentary is preceded by a text of Book 8, a slightly revised version of that in Briscoe's edition in the Bibliotheca Teubneriana (1998), with an apparatus limited to passages where the commentary discusses a textual problem. The book will give readers an understanding of an author once very popular, then long neglected and now enjoying a revival.

The Tria sunt (named for the first two words of the text, also known as the incipit) is the most ambitious and apparently the most widely used of the treatises composed in association with a late fourteenth-century renaissance in the study of rhetoric at Oxford. The identity of its author is not known, but he probably was a Benedictine monk who taught rhetorical composition as part of a course that prepared younger monks for more advanced studies at the university. He sought to gather the most useful precepts from the twelfth- and thirteenth-century arts of poetry and prose, supplement them with additional doctrine and illustrative examples from other works of the same period, and combine all of these materials into a new synthesis tailored to the pedagogical needs of his own time and place. The Tria sunt belongs to the genre frequently called "arts of poetry" but more accurately designated "arts of poetry and prose." These are comprehensive guides to composing well-wrought Latin texts. The two most popular works in the genre, the early thirteenth-century Poetria nova ("New Poetics") by the Englishman Geoffrey of Vinsauf and the Laborintus ("The Labyrinth"; before 1280) by Eberhard the German, are written in verse; the remaining examples, like the Tria sunt, are in prose. Yet the instruction that each offers can be applied to any kind of text. This feature distinguishes this type of rhetorical manual (i.e., "arts of poetry and prose") from the medieval "arts of letter writing" (artes dictandi) and "arts of preaching" (artes praedicandi) that provide specific instruction in composing letters and sermons, respectively.--

This volume presents, for the first time, an edition and facing English translation of all of the stories that belong to the Anglo-Latin corpus of the immensely popular and influential collection of moralized stories from the Middle Ages, known as Gesta Romanorum ('The Deeds of the Romans'). The Anglo-Latin branch of the Gesta is of particular interest and importance as it is the source of the Middle English versions of the stories as well as the earliest English printed version, and includes stories that are either not found in continental Gesta collections or that differ significantly from the continental versions. Oxford, Bodleian Library, Douce 310 has been chosen as the base manuscript for the edition and has been collated with seven other Anglo-Latin manuscripts in order to illustrate the nature and degree of textual variation that is a feature of the Anglo-Latin Gesta tradition, and to facilitate comparison between the Anglo-Latin versions of the stories and the Middle English and Early Modern English versions. An edited text and translation of the stories that do not form part of the collection in Douce 310, some of which are found in only one or two manuscripts, have also been provided. In addition, the volume includes notes that identify the sources, analogues, and folktale motifs of the stories and that explain key literary, cultural, and linguistic features, and an introduction that provides an overview of the history and significance of the Gesta and a detailed account of the Anglo-Latin tradition.

Jean Gobi le Jeune ( † 1350) propose dans son Echelle du Ciel (Scala coeli) un millier de ces récits corsetés dans un appareil didactique sophistiqué. Mais malgré un objectif pastoral fortement affirmé dans son prologue, ce Dominicain se laisse parfois prendre au charme du conte, pour le plus grand plaisir de ses lecteurs et l'intérêt des spécialistes de l'histoire des textes. L'autre œuvre de Jean Gobi le Jeune - un dialogue avec un revenant - apparaît comme un maillon essentiel dans la mise en place du culte des âmes du purgatoire à partir du xive siècle. Ces textes, encore peu connus, sont analysés dans quatre perspectives complémentaires : exemplarité et éducation, une œuvre entre oralité et écriture, encadrement des comportements sociaux et des attitudes religieuses. Écrits en latin, ces ouvrages sont rendus accessibles aux lecteurs par de nombreuses traductions.

The volume examines textual and material conditions of such works in manuscript, tracing their development through and beyond the arrival of the printing press in England in the late fifteenth century.
