Sol LeWitt (1928-2007), one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, upended traditional practices of how art is made and marketed. A key figure in minimalism and conceptualism, he proclaimed that the work of the mind is much more important than that of the hand. For his site-specific work--wall drawings and sculpture in dozens of countries--he created the idea and basic plan and then hired young artists to install the pieces. Though typically enormous and intricate, the physical works held no value. The worth was in the pieces of paper that certified and described them. LeWitt championed and financially supported colleagues, including women artists brushed aside by the bullies of a male-dominated profession. Yet the man himself has remained an enigma, as he refused to participate in the culture of celebrity. Lary Bloom's book draws on personal recollections of LeWitt, whom he knew in the last years of the artist's life, as well as LeWitt's letters and papers and over one hundred original interviews with his friends and colleagues, including Chuck Close, Ingrid Sischy, Philip Glass, Adrian Piper, Jan Dibbets, and Carl Andre. This absorbing chronicle brings new information to our understanding of this important artist, linking the extraordinary arc of his life to his iconic work. Includes 28 illustrations. -- Amazon.com

This publication is a substantial archive and a singular point of entry into thinking with and understanding Andrea Fraser's work and reception. The interview format provides intimate insight into Fraser's self-positioning as a central aspect of her practice. By presenting the artist's voice as mediated through interlocutors ranging from professional peers to popular media, 'Collected Interviews, 1990-2018' uniquely contextualizes Fraser's practice in the artistic, institutional, and discursive fields in which she intervenes. As Fraser is engaged, challenged, and understood from diverse perspectives, readers learn as much about her artistic commitments from the artist's humor and affect as from her incisive analyses. The collection spans three decades, from the early 1990s to the present, and is organized chronologically with minimal editing. The collection's unmediated format allows Fraser's key ideas and themes to attain deeper resonance through repetitions and subtle differentiations over multiple conversations.

Despite the ubiquitous presence of photographic humor in art and popular media, the phenomenon has as yet received very little scholarly attention. Focusing on staged humor rather than on comic effects of snapshot photography, this volume brings together leading scholars in the field addressing humor performed in front of the camera, often specifically created for the camera, and the performative joke-work done by the medium itself. A first section explores how photography, due to its "shattering" qualities, turns into a privileged medium for eliciting humorous effects and how humor can be discerned within the photographic event. A second section discusses the toolbox of photographic trickery (photomontage, double exposure and cinematic movement) that allows photography to mock itself. The book closes with a section on photographic wit in conceptual art, both in canonized and more locally distinct practices.

It appears to always be the task of the subsequent generations to examine the relevance of an artist’s work according to art historical criteria. But what if the artist has negotiated precisely this question in his work from the very beginning? Martin Kippenberger (1953–1997) is one of the most complex and most important German artists of the last two decades of the 20th century, both in terms of media and style. Together with his friends and companions, he decisively shaped the image of art in the postmodern era and, in a rather anarchic way, helped many ideas gain ground. His wit, his unrestrained creative urge and the resulting work assured him a prominent position within the contemporary art scene already during his lifetime, even though not always generally recognized or accepted. Today, however, this assessment is universally shared across the globe, and his work occupies an important place in art historical consideration. In his oeuvre, a profound knowledge of art history merges directly with an almost inexhaustible trove of stories of art and anecdotes on art, a sharp observational talent, honed in daily life, and with the direct connection of artistic expression to his own live; Martin Kippenberger’s attitude and understanding of his role as an artist has become a model for future generations. Drawings, posters, collages, multiples, artist’s books, photographs, music, paintings, sculptures and expansive installations – Kippenberger’s work not only encompasses all media of 20th century art, but also pursues them to the most complex dimensions of their possibilities. Or should the slogan »I love No waiting«, which he presented to Günther Förg’s camera, have already revealed everything to us about the artist, the era some 30 years ago, and our own former youth? And did he already let us know then that we should eventually be yearning for the zeitgeist embodied so uniquely by his art?

Illusion Brought Me Here maps out the extensive body of work of Mexican artist Mario García Torres for the first time. New essays by Sophie Berrebi, Julia Bryan-Wilson, Rulo David, Vincenzo de Bellis, Caroline Dumalin, and Tom McDonough look at the way García Torres's work addresses ideas of failure, uncertainty, and memory, and at how the counter-narratives he weaves invite us to revisit and rethink the legacies of conceptual art in the Americas and Europe. This catalogue, published on the occasion of the artist's first survey exhibition in the US and in Europe, also features a richly illustrated and annotated selection of nearly fifty works, the most comprehensive compilation of the artist's practice available in print. - "In Spanish, my native tongue, 'ilusión' has more than one meaning. It can suggest a misinterpretation of the senses, something like a deceptive appearance, or a figment of the imagination. But the word can also be used to convey a sense of hope, of favorable expectations: 'Ilusión me trajo aquí' is thus both an anticipation that something fortuitous might happen here, and a misleading view, the figment or mirage that launched a personal journey into art."
