"The aim of this book is to investigate the taking and giving of hostages in peace processes during the Viking Age and early Middle Ages in Scandinavia and adjacent areas. Scandinavia has been absent in previous research about hostages from the perspectives of legal and social history, which has mostly focused on Antiquity (the Roman Empire), Continental Germanic cultures, such as the Merovingian realm, and Anglo-Saxon England. The examples presented are from confrontations between Scandinavians and other peoples in which the hostage giving and taking was displayed as a ritual act and thus became symbolically important. Hostages were a vital part of the peace processes and used as resources by both sides in the 'areas of communication' within the 'areas of confrontation'. Literary texts as well as runic inscriptions, picture stones, place names, and personal names are used as source material." Nach diversen Ausrufungen eines Zeitalters des ›Postheroismus‹ scheint antikes Heldentum doppelt irrelevant geworden zu sein: zum einen wegen der zunehmenden Fragwürdigkeit von Heldentum allgemein, zum anderen wegen der historischen Distanz der Antike. Dieser Band zeigt demgegenüber die kontinuierliche Relevanz antiken Heldentums aus rezeptionsgeschichtlicher Perspektive, indem er sich auf die Moderne vom 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart konzentriert. Die Beiträge widmen sich der vielfältigen Aufnahme und Adaption antiken Heldentums in literarischen Verarbeitungen von Nachkriegserfahrungen (napoleonische Kriege, deutscher Kolonialismus, Zweiter Weltkrieg), in totalitären politischen Systemen des 20. Jahrhunderts, in der schulischen Vermittlung, in gesellschaftspolitischen Themen wie race und gender sowie in poetologisch-epistemologischen literarischen Entwürfen.

In this study, Jo Stoner investigates the role of domestic material culture in Late Antiquity. Using archaeological, visual and textual evidence from across the Roman Empire, the personal meanings of late antique possessions are revealed through reference to theoretical approaches including object biography. Heirlooms, souvenirs, and gift objects are discussed in terms of sentimental value, before the book culminates in a case study reassessing baskets as an artefact type. This volume succeeds in demonstrating personal scales of value for artefacts, moving away from the focus on economic and social status that dominate studies in this field. It thus represents a new interpretation of domestic material culture from Late Antiquity, revealing how objects transformed houses into homes during this period.
