The rolling hills and meadows of Maine seem a world away from the fume-choked dangers of the city. It's only those big trucks on the road outside which growl out unnerving threats. Behind the house there's a carefully cleared path up into the woods to a place where generations of local children have walked in procession with the solemn innocence of the young, taking with them their dear departed pets for burial.A sad place maybe, but safe. Surely a safe place. Not a place to seep into your dreams, to wake you, sweating with fear and foreboding...

In Artificial Color, Catherine Keyser examines the early twentieth century phenomenon, wherein US writers became fascinated with modern food-global geographies, nutritional theories, and technological innovations. African American literature of the 1920s and 1930s uses new food technologies as imaginative models for resisting and recasting oppressive racial categories. In his masterwork Cane (1923), Jean Toomer follows sugar from the boiling-pots of the South to the speakeasies of the North. Through effervescent and colorful soda, he rejects the binary of black and white in favor of a dream of artificial color and a new American race. In his serial science fiction, Black Empire (1938-39), George Schuyler associates hydroponics and raw foods with racial hybridity and utopian futures. The second half of the book focuses on white expatriate writers who experienced local food cultures as sensuous encounters with racial others. Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein associate regional European races with the ideal of terroir and aspire to transplantation through their own connoisseurship. In their novels set in the Mediterranean, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald both dramatize the white body's susceptibility to intoxicating and stimulating substances like wine and coffee. For Scott Fitzgerald, the climatological and culinary corruption of the South produces the tragic fall of white masculinity. For Zelda, by contrast, it exposes the destructiveness and fictitiousness of the white feminine purity ideal. During the Great Depression and the Second World War, African American writers Zora Neale Hurston and Dorothy West exposed the racism that shaped the global food industry and the precarity of black labor. Their engagement with food, however, insisted upon pleasure as well as vulnerability, the potential of sensuous flesh and racial affiliation.

En 1842, une église catholique destinée aux fidèles de couleur et une communauté religieuse réservée aux femmes de couleur libres sont toutes deux fondées à La Nouvelle-Orléans. Emblèmes de la vie religieuse des esclaves et des Noirs libres de la région, elles témoignent ensemble de la persistance et de la vivacité d’un afro-catholicisme typiquement louisianais. L’expérience religieuse des esclaves catholiques de la Louisiane dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle découle toutefois de trajectoires particulières ; les esclaves évoluent dans des mondes sociaux et culturels divergents, voire contrastants, où priment les exigences de l’esclavage racial. Un esclave confiné sur une plantation isolée de la paroisse Saint-Jean-Baptiste, au coeur de la vallée du Mississippi, vivra une expérience totalement différente d’un esclave intégré dans une domesticité urbaine au sein de la ville commerciale et cosmopolite qu’est La Nouvelle-Orléans. Véritables témoignages de leur vie chrétienne, le baptême, le mariage et l’enterrement représentent trois moments majeurs de cette expérience religieuse. Leur analyse permet ainsi d’approfondir un champ historiographique encore en friche. Ce faisant, cet ouvrage souligne les aléas de la rencontre entre catholicisme et esclavage et met en lumière les prémisses de la construction d’un afro-catholicisme distinct, propre aux communautés esclaves rurales et urbaines de la Louisiane.

Common Law, Civil Law, and Colonial Law builds upon the legal historian F.W. Maitland's famous observation that history involves comparison, and that those who ignore every system but their own 'hardly came in sight of the idea of legal history'. The extensive introduction addresses the intellectual challenges posed by comparative approaches to legal history. This is followed by twelve essays derived from papers delivered at the 24th British Legal History Conference. These essays explore patterns in legal norms, processes, and practice across an exceptionally broad chronological and geographical range.
