"The complex interweaving of different Western visions of China had a profound impact on artistic exchange between China and the West during the nineteenth century. Beyond Chinoiserie addresses the complexity of this exchange. While the playful Western "vision of Cathay" formed in the previous century continued to thrive, a more realistic vision of China was increasingly formed through travel accounts, paintings, watercolors, prints, book illustrations, and photographs. Simultaneoulsy, the new discipline of sinology led to a deepening of the understanding of Chinese cultural history. Leading and emerging scholars in the fields of art history, literary studies and material culture, have authored the ten essays in this book that deal with artistic relations between China and the West at a time when Western powers' attempts to extend a sphere of influence in China led to increasingly hostile political interactions"--

From the fall of Constantinople in 1453 until the eighteenth century, many Western European writers viewed the Ottoman Empire with almost obsessive interest. Typically they reacted to it with fear and distrust; and such feelings were reinforced by the deep hostility of Western Christendom towards Islam. Yet there was also much curiosity about the social and political system on which the huge power of the sultans was based. In the sixteenth century, especially, when Ottoman territorial expansion was rapid and Ottoman institutions seemed particularly robust, there was even open admiration. In this path-breaking book Noel Malcolm ranges through these vital centuries of East-West interaction, studying all the ways in which thinkers in the West interpreted the Ottoman Empire as a political phenomenon - and Islam as a political religion. Useful Enemies shows how the concept of 'oriental despotism' began as an attempt to turn the tables on a very positive analysis of Ottoman state power, and how, as it developed, it interacted with Western debates about monarchy and government. Noel Malcolm also shows how a negative portrayal of Islam as a religion devised for political purposes was assimilated by radical writers, who extended the criticism to all religions, including Christianity itself. Examining the works of many famous thinkers (including Machiavelli, Bodin, and Montesquieu) and many less well-known ones, Useful Enemies illuminates the long-term development of Western ideas about the Ottomans, and about Islam. Noel Malcolm shows how these ideas became intertwined with internal Western debates about power, religion, society, and war. Discussions of Islam and the Ottoman Empire were thus bound up with mainstream thinking in the West on a wide range of important topics. These Eastern enemies were not just there to be denounced. Ce volume est le produit d’une rencontre entre historiens, germanistes et spécialistes en information-communication. Si l’historiographie de l’antiaméricanisme français est bien nourrie, de même que celle de l’américanisation, sous l’impulsion de travaux en histoire culturelle et en histoire économique, il est rare de les trouver confrontées dans un même volume. C’est une des ambitions de ce livre qui s’est attaché à proposer, des interventions à dimension comparative et en regard les unes des autres. Ainsi, les relations entre les milieux économiques français et américains sont étudiées de part et d’autre des deux conflits mondiaux et permettent de mesurer les éléments de continuité dans les relations entre les élites économiques françaises et américaines sur fond de promotion de la rationalisation industrielle durant les années vingt et de la productivité au lendemain du second conflit mondial. Les contributions sur l’antiaméricanisme se situent à différentes échelles : surplombante lorsqu’il s’agit de prendre la mesure de la diversité des antiméricanismes des deux côtés de l’Atlantique. Bilatérale à travers l’exemple américano-helvétique. Nationales à travers l’exemple de l’Italie et de la France des années trente dont les deux antiaméricanismes sont plus proches qu’on ne pourrait le penser. La dernière partie de l’ouvrage porte sur la place des médias et de la culture devant l’américanisation et l’antiaméricanisme, abordée via le cinéma, la bande dessinée, la musique rock et la littérature.
