"Accompanying Lévy Gorvy's exhibition of the same name, this beautifully produced catalog highlights the celebrated Italian painter Carol Rama's (1918-2015) engagement with the artistic landscape of her home city of Turin. Alongside color plates, an essay by Robert Storr explores Rama's examination of conventionally obscured and shamed parts of human bodies, and shows how she diverged from the oppressive social order of her time. Curator Flavia Frigeri places Rama within the artistic landscape of the city in her essay, and a text by the writer Robert Lumley explores Rama's engagement with the political scene in Turin. An illustrated chronology of Rama and the city highlights exhibitions of artists whose catalogs Rama collected in her home library, and newly commissioned poetry by Sylvia Gorelick and Lara Mimosa Montes responds to Rama and her oeuvre."

With more than 30 works spanning from 1962 to 2018, the catalogue explores three themes of Paolini's work. "Portrait and Self-portrait," a veritable topos of Western art history and focus of the practice of Paolini. "On the Surface," a view on his relationship with the theme of perspective in all its forms, from an exploration of lines to the symbology of horizons up to the use of mirroring, tautology, and repetition as tools for analyzing space and time. "One of Two" explores the relationship between myth and classicism in Paolini's artistic universe: emblems of an ideal beauty that create a seemingly unbridgeable distance between the work of art and the viewer. The catalogue is [accompanied] by an autobiographical photobook, made by the artist himself, that collects almost 100 unpublished photographs from Giulio Paolini's Archive. --Publisher's website.

My husband Jan finished me on 17 June 1439. . . . My age was 33 years." So speaks Margaret van Eyck from the frame of her portrait. This painted inscription honors its maker Jan van Eyck, even as it blurs the distinction between living subject and painted double. Frame Work, an in-depth study of paintings, sculpture, and manuscript illumination in their varied social settings, argues that frames and framing devices are central to how Renaissance images operate. In a period of rapid cultural change, framing began to secure the very notion of an independent "artwork," and reframings could regulate the meaning attached to works of art-a process that continues in the present day. Highlighting innovations in framing introduced by figures such as Donatello, Giovanni Bellini, and Jean Fouquet, this original book shows how the inventive character of Renaissance frames responds to broader sociopolitical and religious change. The frame emerges as a site of beauty, display, and persuasion, and as a mechanism of control.
