This paper uses cross-sectional data to provide a descriptive analysis of employment trends of immigrants in France, Spain and Italy between 2005 and 2013. Immigrants are distinguished by national origin, duration of residency, skill level and gender. Their employment rates are compared to those of natives over the course of the period with the aim of using factors related to immigrant assimilation literature to explain the differences with natives, as well as those between markets. The results show clear indications to support the presence of aging, period and cohort effects. The findings show very varied employment trends in each country, indicating different market structures interact differently with worker characteristics. The analysis therefore finds that while assimilation literature is relevant to Europe, not all aspect are equally applicable in every market.
