Abstract

"What does it mean when a life is changed through the serendipity of a chance encounter ? How is it that someone can feel an affinity with a place ? What is happening when someone feels almost literally transported to another time by a chance encounter with a smell or a texture or a song ? In each of these cases a potent connection is being made, involving forces, flows, energies and atmospherics that conventional sociological approaches can find hard to grasp, but that are important nonetheless. In this innovative book Jennifer Mason argues that these are affinities - potent charges and charismatically lively connections in our relationalities, that rise up and matter in some way and that enchant the everyday. She suggests that exploring affinities opens up new possibilities for conceptualizing the experience of living in the world, which she names the socio-atmospherics of everyday life. The book invites the reader to embrace possibilities and themes that may seem outside the usual range of sociology, and to engage in a more open, attentive, inventive and poetic sociological sensibility"

Abstract

Opto-mechanical Fiber Optic Sensors: Research, Technology, and Applications in Mechanical Sensing offers comprehensive coverage of the theoretical aspects of fiber optic sensors (FOS), along with current and emerging applications in the mechanical, petroleum, biomedical, biomechanical, aerospace and automotive industries. Special attention is given to FOS applications in harsh environments. Due to recent technology advances, optical fibers have found uses in many industrial applications. Various sectors are major targets for FOS's capable of measuring mechanical parameters, such as pressure, stress, strain and temperature. Opto-mechanical FOS's offer unique advantages, including immunity to electromagnetic interference, high fidelity and signal-to-noise ratio, low-loss remote sensing and small size. Provides current background information and fundamentals on fiber optic sensors technology Covers a wide variety of established and emerging applications of FOS Focuses on mechanical parameter measurement Includes contributions from leading researchers and practitioners in their fields Covers current methods of fabrication and packaging

Abstract

"Vision traditionally occupies the height of the sensorial hierarchy. The sense of clarity and purity conveyed by vision, allows it to be explicitly associated with truth and knowledge. The law has always relied on vision and representation, from eye-witnesses to photography, to imagery and emblems. The law and its normative gaze can be understood as that which decrees what is permitted to be and become visible and what is not. Indeed, even if law's perspectival view is bound to be betrayed by the realities of perception, it is nonetheless productive of real effects on the world. This first title in the interdisciplinary series 'Law and the Senses' asks how we can develop new theoretical approaches to law and seeing that go beyond a simple critique of the legal pretension to truth. This volume aims to understand how law might see and unsee, and how in its turn is seen and unseen. It explores devices and practices of visibility, the evolution of iconology and iconography, and the relation between the gaze of the law and the blindness of justice. The contributions, all radically interdisciplinary, are drawn from photography, legal theory, philosophy, and poetry."

Abstract

Why suppose that sense perception is an accurate source of information about the physical environment? More generally, is it possible to demonstrate that our basic ways of forming beliefs are reliable? In this book, a leading analytic philosopher confronts this classic problem through detailed investigation of sense perception, the source of beliefs in which we place the most confidence. Carefully assessing the available arguments, William P. Alston concludes that it is not possible to show in any noncircular way that sense perception is a reliable source of beliefs.Alston thoroughly examines the main arguments that have been advanced for the reliability of sense perception, including arguments from the various kinds of success we achieve by relying on the sense perception, arguments that some features of our sense experience are best explained by supposing that it is an accurate guide, and arguments that there is something conceptually incoherent about the idea that sense perception is not reliable. He concludes that all of these arguments that are not disqualified in other ways are epistemically circular, for they use premises based upon the very source in question. Alston then suggest that the most appropriate response to the impossibility of showing that our basic sources of beliefs are reliable is an appeal to the practical rationality of engaging in certain socially established belief-forming practices. The Reliability of Sense Perception will be welcome by epistemologists, cognitive scientists, and philosophers of science.

Abstract

Hearing Things is a meditation on sound's work in literature. Drawing on the writings of critics and philosophers but especially on the comments of many poets and novelists who have pointed to the role of the ear in writing and reading, it offers a reconsideration of literature itself as an exercise in hearing things. Ranging from Alfred Tennyson to Alice Oswald, Virginia Woolf to Marilynne Robinson, Walter de la Mare to Les Murray, Angela Leighton examines various ways of listening to the printed word, while examining how writers themselves manage the expressivity of sound in their silent writings. Although her focus is on poets from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries--Alfred Tennyson, W. B. Yeats, Walter de la Mare, Robert Frost, Wallace Stevens, Elizabeth Bishop, Les Murray, Jorie Graham, and Anne Stevenson--Leighton expands her scope to include letter writing, rhythm, and the difficult relationship between philosophical and literary texts. While her larger argument is always answerable to the specifics of the writer under discussion, one clear message emerges from the whole: literature by its very nature commands listening, and listening is a form of cognitive attention that has often been overlooked.--
