Toen het oog van kunsthandelaar Jan Six op het "Portret van een jonge man" in een veilingcatalogus van Christies viel, wist hij meteen dat het niet een werk uit "the circle of Rembrandt" was, maar dat de meester het zélf had geschilderd. De laatste keer dat een totaal onbekende Rembrandt werd ontdekt was in 1974 (De doop van de eunuch). Hoe overtuig je de wereld van zo'n ontdekking? Bestaat er zoiets als een absoluut oog? Hoe bijzonder is dit schilderij in verhouding tot het overige werk van Nederlands beroemdste schilder? Jan Six neemt in dit boek de lezer op meeslepende en erudiete wijze mee in die spannende ontdekkingstocht en jongensdroom die werkelijkheid werd en laat het "Portret van een jonge" man zien door het oog van zijn ontdekker.

Jan Six (1978) studeerde kunstgeschiedenis en werkte bij veilinghuis Sotheby's in Londen en Amsterdam, als hoofd van de afdeling Oude Meesters. Sinds 2008 is hij kunsthandelaar en heeft hij zijn eigen galerie, gespecialiseerd in schilderijen en tekeningen van Hollandse en Vlaamse Oude Meesters. Het heeft iets wonderbaarlijks: de smaak, de kunstzin en het scherpe oog van Jan Six uit 1618 herhalen zich, vier eeuwen later, op exact dezelfde manier bij zijn nazaat Jan Six uit 1978. Een enkele keer worden zo generaties overbrugd en wordt een vergeten Rembrandt teruggevonden.

A black man who grew up in the Jim Crow South, Jack Whitten (1939-2018) arrived in New York in 1959 and began a wide-ranging exploration into the nature of painting and art-making that would sustain more than five decades of work. Early in his career, in 1970, Whitten experienced his breakthrough moment: when he lifted a thick slab of paint off its support, he realized he could experiment within the physical, dimensional space of the paint itself. After that, all bets were off: I cut paint, I laminate paint, I grind paint, I freeze paint, I boil paint, he said.

Approaching abstraction as scientist and mystic, Whitten probed the expressive and material possibilities of painting. He constantly changed styles, developed new methods and took up new subject matter, but it is precisely this spirit of curious inquiry that unites his relentlessly experimental career.

Jack Whitten: Notes from the Woodshed collects the artists notes from his work in the studio alongside selected interviews and texts, presenting an in-depth look at his rich studio practice. This publication comes at a crucial time; after decades of neglect, the art world has just begun to take stock of what Whitten achieved in his body of work. At the heart of Anj Smith’s output is painting – as a subject, a technology, a personal language, and a cultural signifier. The traditional subgenres of painting – landscape, portrait and still life – overlap in Smith’s works. Their sources of inspiration are manifold and include art history, literature, fashion subcultures, and the mysteries of the plant and animal world.

While musing over titles for the exhibition, Smith discovered the Crinoidea – the sea lilies and feather stars. The Crinoidea have always been with us, developing slowly, but remaining fundamentally unchanged. For Smith they have become a personal metaphor for painting.

Smith finds the language of oil painting especially rich for rendering her subject matter. She diversely deploys its various modes of expression: thick, translucent layers of paint, details painted with a fine brush, and pigments squeezed straight from the tube.

In her latest paintings Smith has addressed issues related to the fragility of identity and the complexity of gender, one influence here being a close friend who underwent a long, traumatic gender reassignment.

Smith admits that her latest portraits probably contain autobiographical elements – not on the level of physical resemblance, but of an internal state of mind. These psychological portraits are research into how the self or experience of the self can be depicted using the means of creative expression.

“My main medium is ideas rather than painting, although painting itself is also the subject of the work," Smith says. In her production she explores how art and life are mediated by the painted surface.

“One fascinating aspect of Anj Smith’s work is the way she combines traditional oil painting with conceptual contemporary art," says Museum Director Päivi Loimaala.

Anj Smith is a Sara Hildén Art Museum Collection artist. To coincide with her solo show, an exhibition of works from the Sara Hildén Foundation Collection, Sara Hildén and the Classics, is opening on the Museum’s ground floor.

Anj Smith will introduce her exhibition to the public at a meet-the-artist event at 11am on Saturday, September 22. The event will be in English.

À travers environ 80 peintures et dessins provenant de prestigieuses collections publiques et privées de par le monde, cette exposition et le catalogue qui laccompagne se concentrent pour la première fois exclusivement sur luvre de Nicolas de Staël peinte en Provence de juillet 1953 à octobre 1954.

Cette année marque un tournant dans la vie et luvre du peintre, qui découvre la lumière du Midi. Il fait aussi lexpérience intense de la solitude et puise son génie dans le désespoir le plus profond, dans lexaltation la plus haute, dans une relation amoureuse périlleuse. Le peintre confiera à son marchand Paul Rosenberg, le 12 février 1954 : « Si vous êtes content de lexposition, cest que jai pu travailler ici dans le Midi et en Sicile. »

Avec labstraction des premières années, à travers ses toiles organiques, De Staël crée des formes qui traduisent et pressentent la solitude de notre époque. Les tableaux abstraits des années 1947-1948 ont été, selon les mots du peintre, « léquilibre de base de tout ce qui suivra ». Cet équilibre permet de comprendre comment le peintre passe du concret au formel, de la nature à la métaphysique.

À partir de Lagnes (juillet 1953) et de Ménerbes (novembre 1953), le regard du peintre aura rencontré son « feu ». Les paysages sont saisis au plus près de leur motif, avec une attention portée à lévolution de la lumière au fil de la journée.
Cest depuis Lagnes, en août 1953, que le peintre voyagera jusquen Sicile. Le rythme de ce parcours définit lurgence de sa création. Paysages, sites archéologiques, musées, églises, lui permettent alors, une fois de retour à Lagnes, de mettre en chantier les grands tableaux, à partir des notes prises dans ses carnets à Agrigente, Sélinonte, Syracuse, Fiesole.
Cest à ce moment que le peintre noue une relation amoureuse avec Jeanne, une amie de René Char. Ce qui résulte de cet état passionnel trouvera son écho dans lintensité des paysages de Sicile, mais aussi dans les grands tableaux de nus qui renouvellent le genre.

Lorsquil prépare son exposition à New York, en janvier 1954, le peintre a la certitude davoir donné le maximum de sa force : « Je vous donne là, avec ce que vous avez, de quoi faire la plus belle exposition que jaie jamais faite. »
Lexposition « Nicolas de Staël en Provence » rend compte des plus hautes envolées picturales du peintre, insufflées par ses doutes les plus profonds, par une joie débordant sur laspect le plus sombre, par une immense fragilité qui se meut en puissance créatrice.
