Jahrhunderts intensivieren sich die diplomatischen und wirtschaftlichen Kontakte zwischen Europa und dem Osmanischen Reich sowie die europäischen Bemühungen um Kolonien in Afrika. Professionelle und vertrauensvolle Dolmetscher sind gefragter denn je. Wie aufschlussreich ein Blick in die Vergangenheit sein kann, zeigt Lena Skalweit anhand der Entwicklung der Dolmetscherausbildung und des Berufsstandes selbst zwischen dem ausgehenden 17. und dem beginnenden 20. Jahrhundert. Ihr besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei der französischen École des jeunes de langues, der österreichischen k.k. Akademie der Orientalischen Sprachen und dem deutschen Seminar für Orientalische Sprachen sowie dem Dolmetscherwesen in den deutschen und französischen Kolonien (Nord-)Afrikas.
