Los artículos reunidos en este volumen hacen un recorrido de sur a norte por el continente americano y diversos aspectos tanto de la producción de cómics en la América hispanohablante, como de la representación de la Historia en este medio, a través del análisis del estado de la cuestión en diferentes países, incluyendo un ejemplo del cómic latino en los EE.UU. Además, realiza una suerte de transgresión al incluir en la temática el análisis de un filme de dibujos animados, abriendo de tal modo la discusión hacia las similitudes y/o diferencias entre ambos medios.

Se réservant uniquement aux fermiers et fermières, Jum et Gilles voient leur amitié et leurs idéaux bouleversés le jour où Jeanne-Morue, plantureuse jeune femme à la chevelure incendiaire, vient s'immiscer entre eux, faisant resurgir le désir individuel. Clin d'œil grivois au Jules et Jim de Truffaut, LE GR R A AOU déborde largement la facétie pornographique et interroge le désir d'alternatives à la société matérialiste et urbaine. Road-movie rural et jouissif, LE GR R A AOU explore des territoires oubliés, enclavés, que tentent de ranimer néo-ruraux de tous bords. Mais la quête vire peu à peu au drame, les deux auteurs étant moins intéressés par les enjeux de la chaire que les transgressions politiques et sociales. Réalisé entièrement au Bic quatre couleurs, le récit vibre au diapason des personnages, tendus vers leur idéal. Le dessin, précis, détaillé, met en scène une nature débordant de pierres, feuilles, animaux musculeux, striés de nervures suggérant malicieusement à chaque page un sexe turgescent. Influencé par le cubisme, Étienne Beck déconstruit la nature et les corps pour les ramener à de simples formes géométriques, stylisant certains détails, en fouillant d'autres, tout en adoptant des perspectives faussement naïves. Le résultat est tout simplement ahurissant : Étienne Beck aboutit à une stupéfiante intensité expressive. La nature luxuriante fait peu à peu place à des contrées brutes et menaçantes où les utopies et l'humanité ravagée viennent achever leur course.

La bande dessinée, qui a longtemps pâti de son image de "mauvais genre", est désormais pleinement reconnue comme une pratique culturelle légitime. Ce statut de "neuvième art", singulier à l'espace franco-belge, est étroitement lié à une autre exception : le poids du livre dans la publication de la bande dessinée. Ce livre montre comment la bande dessinée passe, en quelques décennies, d'une forme quasi exclusivement vouée aux pages des périodiques à l'un des secteurs les plus dynamiques de l'édition franco-belge. Entre la loi de 1949 sur les publications destinées à la jeunesse et le "printemps des éditeurs" quarante ans plus tard, c'est un marché qui se structure, avec ses imprimeurs qui s'improvisent éditeurs, et ses éditeurs qui s'emparent d'un secteur porteur. En se fondant sur la connaissance intime des évolutions esthétiques de la bande dessinée et un dépouillement approfondi des archives d'éditeurs, l'auteur retrace l'apparition du standard éditorial de l'album franco-belge (le "48 CC") et étudie comment cette forme de publication affecte les manières de créer, de transmettre et de recevoir la bande dessinée.

Despite the boom in scholarship in both Comics Studies and Memory Studies, the two fields rarely interact—especially with issues beyond the representation of traumatic and autobiographical memories in comics. With a focus on the roles played by styles and archives—in their physical and metaphorical manifestations—this edited volume offers an original intervention, highlighting several novel ways of thinking about comics and memory as comics memory. Bringing together scholars as well as cultural actors, the contributions combine studies on European and North American comics and offer a representative overview of the main comics genres and forms, including superheroes, Westerns, newspaper comics, diary comics, comics reportage and alternative comics. In considering the many manifestations of memory in comics as well as the functioning and influence of institutions, public and private practices, the book exemplifies new possibilities for understanding the complex entanglements of memory and comics.
