This contributed volume features invited papers on current research and applications in mathematical structures. Featuring various disciplines in the mathematical sciences and physics, articles in this volume discuss fundamental scientific and mathematical concepts as well as their applications to topical problems. Special emphasis is placed on important methods, research directions and applications of analysis within and beyond each field. Covered topics include Metric operators and generalized hermiticity, Semi-frames, Hilbert-Schmidt operator, Symplectic affine action, Fractional Brownian motion, Walker Osserman metric, Nonlinear Maxwell equations, The Yukawa model, Heisenberg observables, Nonholonomic systems, neural networks, Seiberg-Witten invariants, photon-added coherent state, electrostatic double layers, and star products and functions. All contributions are from the participants of the conference held October 2016 in Cotonou, Benin in honor of Professor Mahouton Norbert Hounkonnou for his outstanding contributions to the mathematical and physical sciences and education. Accessible to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, this volume is a useful resource to applied scientists, applied and pure mathematicians, and mathematical and theoretical physicists.

Featuring research from the 2017 research symposium of the Association for Women in Mathematics, this volume presents recent findings in pure mathematics and a range of advances and novel applications in fields such as engineering, biology, and medicine. Featured topics include geometric group theory, generalized iterated wreath products of cyclic groups and symmetric groups, Conway-Coxeter friezes and mutation, and classroom experiments in teaching collegiate mathematics. A review of DNA topology and a computational study of learning-induced sequence reactivation during sharp-wave ripples are also included in this volume. Numerous illustrations and tables convey key results throughout the book. This volume highlights research from women working in academia, industry, and government. It is a helpful resource for researchers and graduate students interested in an overview of the latest research in mathematics. .

This book discusses about the basic topics on inequalities and their applications. These include the arithmetic mean–geometric mean inequality, Cauchy–Schwarz inequality, Chebyshev inequality, rearrangement inequality, convex and concave functions and Muirhead's theorem. The book contains over 400 problems with their solutions. A chapter on geometric inequalities is a special feature of this book. Most of these problems are from International Mathematical Olympiads and from many national mathematical Olympiads. The book is intended to help students who are preparing for various mathematical competitions. It is also a good source book for graduate students who are consolidating their knowledge of inequalities and their applications. .

This volume provides academic discussion on the theory and practice of mathematical analysis of nonlinear and inverse problems in electromagnetics and their applications. From mathematical problem statement to numerical results, the featured articles provide a concise overview of comprehensive approaches to the solution of problems. Articles highlight the most recent research concerning reliable theoretical approaches and numerical techniques and cover a wide range of applications, including acoustics, electromagnetics, optics, medical imaging, and geophysics. The nonlinear and ill-posed nature of inverse problems and the challenges they present when developing new numerical methods are explained, and numerical verification of proposed new methods on simulated and experimental data is provided. Based on the special session of the same name at the 2017 Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium, this book offers a platform for interaction between theoretical and practical researchers and between senior and incoming members in the field.

Offering a unified exposition of calculus and classical real analysis, this textbook presents a meticulous introduction to single‐variable calculus. Throughout, the exposition makes a distinction between the intrinsic geometric definition of a notion and its analytic characterization, establishing firm foundations for topics often encountered earlier without proof. Each chapter contains numerous examples and a large selection of exercises, as well as a “Notes and Comments” section, which highlights distinctive features of the exposition and provides additional references to relevant literature. This second edition contains substantial revisions and additions, including several simplified proofs, new sections, and new and revised figures and exercises. A new chapter discusses sequences and series of real‐valued functions of a real variable, and their continuous counterpart: improper integrals depending on a parameter. Two new appendices cover a construction of the real numbers using Cauchy sequences, and a self‐contained proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. In addition to the usual prerequisites for a first course in single‐variable calculus, the reader should possess some mathematical maturity and an ability to understand and appreciate proofs. This textbook can be used for a rigorous undergraduate course in calculus, or as a supplement to a later course in real analysis. The authors’ A Course in Multivariable Calculus is an ideal companion volume, offering a natural extension of the approach developed here to the multivariable setting. From reviews: [The first edition is] a rigorous, well-presented and original introduction to the core of undergraduate mathematics — first-year calculus. It develops this subject carefully from a foundation of high-school algebra, with interesting improvements and insights rarely found in other books. […] This book is a tour de force, and a necessary addition to the library of anyone involved in teaching calculus, or studying it seriously. N.J. Wildberger, Aust. Math. Soc. Gaz.

This monograph presents a unified exposition of latin squares and mutually orthogonal sets of latin squares based on groups. Its focus is on orthomorphisms and complete mappings of finite groups, while also offering a complete proof of the Hall–Paige conjecture. The use of latin squares in constructions of nets, affine planes, projective planes, and transversal designs also motivates this inquiry. The text begins by introducing fundamental concepts, like the tests for determining whether a latin square is based on a group, as well as orthomorphisms and complete mappings. From there, it describes the existence problem for complete mappings of groups, building up to the proof of the Hall–Paige conjecture. The third part presents a comprehensive study of orthomorphism graphs of groups, while the last part provides a discussion of Cartesian projective planes, related combinatorial structures, and a list of open problems. Expanding the author’s 1992 monograph, Orthomorphism Graphs of Groups, this book is an essential reference tool for mathematics researchers or graduate students tackling latin square problems in combinatorics. Its presentation draws on a basic understanding of finite group theory, finite field theory, linear algebra, and elementary number theory—more advanced theories are introduced in the text as needed. .
