En 1973, les ouvrières et ouvriers de l'usine horlogère Lip à Besançon s'opposent aux licenciements qu'on leur promet : occupation, confiscation du stock de montres, redémarrage partiel de la production, organisation des premières paies ouvrières. En mars 1974, au terme d'un conflit au retentissement mondial, devenu un véritable mythe du mouvement social, leur entreprise redémarre, relancée par un consortium d'actionnaires emmené par Antoine Riboud et soutenu par l'État. Les licenciements sont évités. C'est la victoire ouvrière. Mais deux ans plus tard, c'est la faillite. Ceux qui avaient relancé Lip accusent alors Claude Neuschwander, qu'ils avaient placé à la tête de l'entreprise, d'en être le principal responsable. Celui-ci clame pourtant haut et fort que la décision de liquider Lip est un choix politique : le patronat et l'État ont-ils délibérément interrompu la relance ? Ont-ils tué Lip et, si oui, pourquoi ? Cet ouvrage propose de suivre l'hypothèse d'une mise à mort politique de l'entreprise horlogère, en la réinscrivant dans un tournant néolibéral qui la dépasse et l'explique. Engagés dans un travail commun, explorant des séries d'archives inédites, Claude Neuschwander et Guillaume Gourgues, chercheur en science politique, retracent ici méticuleusement cet épisode majeur de l'histoire du capitalisme français qu'a été la relance de Lip. Considérer la fin de Lip comme le résultat d'une stratégie délibérée débouche sur une lecture nouvelle de l'ordre néolibéral actuel qui s'enracine précisément dans cette seconde moitié des années 1970. Cet ouvrage rappelle que le fonctionnement de l'économie se fonde largement sur des choix politiques, et que les licenciements n'ont pas toujours été considérés comme une inévitable loi du marché ou une variable d'ajustement nécessaire de la compétitivité des firmes.

Chinese development is widely considered to be an example of successful developmental catch-up with double-digit growth rates year on year. Some even talk of an emerging power, which may in time replace the US as the global economy's hegemon. And yet there is a dark underside to this 'miracle' in the form of workers' long hours, low pay and lack of welfare benefits. Increasing levels of inequality have gone hand in hand with super exploitative working conditions. Nevertheless, Chinese workers have not simply accepted these conditions of super-exploitation; they have started to fight back. Set against the background of China's integration into the global economy along uneven and combined development lines, this volume explores new forms of resistance by Chinese workers, be it through the state trade union All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) or through informal labour NGOs. It also analyses the links between Chinese formal and informal labour organisations, with labour organisations outside China. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Globalizations.

“Arise Ye Wretched of the Earth” provides a fresh account of the International Working Men’s Association. Founded in London in 1864, the First International gathered trade unions, associations, co-operatives, and individual workers across Europe and the Americas. The IWMA struggled for the emancipation of labour. It organised solidarity with strikers. It took sides in major events, such as the 1871 Paris Commune. It soon appeared as a threat to European powers, which vilified and prosecuted it. Although it split up in 1872, the IWMA played a ground-breaking part in the history of working-class internationalism. In our age of globalised capitalism, large labour migration, and rising nationalisms, much can be learnt from the history of the first international labour organisation.
