The depiction of things – and their secrets, too – has a long visual historical tradition, such as the opulent floral still lifes of Dutch painters, but also the artistic avant-garde of the 20th century or the Neue Sachlichkeit. The »painted pieces« by fifty artists present materiality as the greatest common denominator. The images show tangible things, found objects, and everyday utensils, but also surreal forms and abstract objects, painted »tangibly«. From the classic still life to a random conglomeration of objects, from the cuboid to the smudge: the objects depicted are transformed into painting, and open up a range of pictures celebrating painting in small to very small format: none of the paintings on display are bigger than 50 x 40 cm. The question concerning the »secret of things« not only directs the gaze to what is necessarily hidden, but also to what is evident: what do we see in things, what allusions, clarifications, and new insights arise in relation to reality? However, some things remain a secret, unexplained and enigmatic. The invitation of this exhibition and this catalog is to trace this, to find the magic in things, as well as the open-mindedness to tolerate the enigmatic. The exhibition was curated by Hartmut Neumann for Beck & Eggeling International Fine Art and for the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen. Artists: Thomas Arnolds, Martin Assig, Susanne Kühn, Michael Bauer, Tim Berresheim, Norbert Bisky, Peter Bömmels, Nicola de Maria, Peter Dreher, Lutz Driessen, Robert Elfgen, Wolfgang Ellenrieder, Max Ernst, Jean Fautrier, Bruno Goller, Wolf Hamm, Thomas Hartmann, Anton Henning, K.H. A beautiful visual history book of fantasy art from Romanticism and steampunk to modern illustrations from novels. Art has always been one of the most vivid ways to express people?s imagination. Fantasy art illustrates the full range of human fears and dreams, from mythology, the Bible, and the artist?s own original and exciting stories. This book describes the history of fantasy art from Romanticism in the 18th century to the modern era by exploring the masterpieces of fantasy artists: William Blake, John Martin, Albert Robida, Jules Gabriel Verne, H.G. Welles, and more. It also shows illustrations from science fiction and fantasy novels such as Mary Shelley?s Frankenstein, poems and stories by Edgar Allan Poe, mystery novels by Agatha Christie, and contemporary fantasy novelists such as J.R.R. Tolkien and Michael Ende. This book illustrates the remarkable transition of fantasy art that occurred in 19th century when steampunk was introduced to the fantasy art world. Steampunk was unique because it was a fantasy-based style that was inspired by a real event, the Industrial Revolution. Today, the influence of steampunk can be seen in everywhere, from legendary films by Walt Disney and Hayao Miyazaki?s Studio Ghibli. This book will surely satisfy all lovers of fantasy art and literature.Bron: https://www.bol.com/be/nl/p/the-art-of-fantasy-sci-fi-and-steampunk/9200000083833712/

Sean Scully, one of the most important artists of our time, allows conflict to be carried out in his works--conflict between structure and emotion, body and spirit, impulsivity and reflection. The Irish-American painter has been reinterpreting abstract art since the 1960s, not as a purely formal exploration of color, form, planes, structure, body, and light, but as a medium whose means of expression is tied to external and internal moods, literary influences, and physical experiences. Scully has articulated his attitude in many lectures, interviews, and texts, which comprise the starting point for the exhibition Vita Duplex. With 140 illustrations, the eponymous catalogue provides a comprehensive look at the artist's visual oeuvre, as well as his world of ideas, and defines its place in the history of abstract painting.

Etel Adnan (b.1925) is a Lebanese-American poet, essayist and visual artist. This will be the first book to present a full account of Adnans fascinating life and work, using the drama of her biography, the complexity of her identity, and the cosmopolitan nature of her experience to illuminate the many layers and dimensions of her paintings and their progress over several crucial decades. Adnan came relatively late to painting - her first images were created in the mid-1960s in response to the Californian landscape. Her vocabulary of lines, shapes and colours has changed little since then, and yet there are huge variations in mood, texture, composition and material. Similarly, there is a balance between understanding her paintings as pure abstractions, emulating the shape of thought, and seeing them for the actual landscapes of the many places Adnan has loved, embraced and responded to. Tackling the complexities of her subject with skill and insight, Kaelen Wilson-Goldie unpacks Adnan's multi-layered career to capture the full scope of her artistic endeavours and impressive achievements.
