Between 1850 and 1907, Native Hawaiians sought to develop relationships with other Pacific Islanders, reflecting how they viewed not only themselves as a people but their wider connections to Oceania and the globe. Kealani Cook analyzes the relatively little known experiences of Native Hawaiian missionaries, diplomats, and travelers, shedding valuable light on the rich but understudied accounts of Hawaiians outside of Hawaiʻi. Native Hawaiian views of other islanders typically corresponded with their particular views and experiences of the Native Hawaiian past. The more positive their outlook, the more likely they were to seek cross-cultural connections. This is an important intervention in the growing field of Pacific and Oceanic history and the study of native peoples of the Americas, where books on indigenous Hawaiians are few and far between. Cook returns the study of Hawai'i to a central place in the history of cultural change in the Pacific.

"When the Ottoman Empire met its demise in the early twentieth century, the new republic closed down the Sufi orders, with the rationale that they were anti-modern. Yet the nascent nation, faced with defining its cultural heritage, soon began to emphasize the Turkish ethnicity of the Sufi saints, and, in the case of saints like Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, Hacı Bektaş Veli, and Yunus Emre, to focus on universalist themes found in their poetry and legends, such as love, peace, fellowship, and tolerance between ethnic and religious communities. With this reinterpretation of their legacies (part of a broader ideological shift toward secularism), these saints have now come to be considered the great Turkish humanists. Today their veneration plays a greater role in the nationalistic preservation of Turkish culture than in a remembered heritage of Islamic religion. Humanist Mystics is the first book to examine Islam and secularism within Turkish nationalist ideology through the lens of the commemorated saints. Soileau surveys the Anatolian and Turkish religious and political history as context for his closer attention to the lives and influence of the three Sufi saints. By comparing pre-modern hagiographic and scholarly representations with twentieth-century monographs, literary works, artistic media, and commemorative ceremonies, he shows how the saints have been transformed into humanist mystics, and how this change has led to debates about their character and relevance"--Provided by publisher.

This book, uncovers the lived experiences of street-frequenting young people in Fiji. Typically viewed as ‘out of place’, these young people disturb what it means to be young and Fijian. Despite their marginal existence, they through their activities demonstrate the need to belong. The book adopts a critical postmodern perspective to explore this reality and propose ways of engaging with street-frequenting young people. Candidly written, Street-Frequenting Young People in Fiji identifies issues that provoke the conscience of Fijian hierarchy and its leaders. It will appeal to students and scholars across a range of disciplines- including sociology, childhood and youth studies, and social work- as well as practitioners and policy analysts.
