Abstract

This volume provides educators with an understanding of challenges associated with equity and inclusion at higher education institutions globally and with evidence-based strategies for addressing the challenges associated with implementing equity and inclusion. Higher education institutions continue to address an increasingly complex set of issues regarding equity, diversity and inclusion; many face increasing pressure to find innovative solutions for eliminating access and participation barriers and mitigating practices that impede access, persistence, retention, and graduation rates in higher education. Using comparative international perspectives, this volume looks at how different nations and cultures experience power, privilege, identity, and inclusion with respect to participation in tertiary education, with a specific focus on gender identities.

Abstract

"Around the world lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer individuals are subjected to violence and intimidation based on their real or perceived sexuality, gender identity or expression. With those most at risk of human rights violations often living in areas of low economic development, questions of sexuality, gender identity, and expression have become a significant area of research within the field of development studies. The Routledge Handbook of Queer Development Studies is the first full length study of queer development studies, collecting the very best in research from around the world. Topics for discussion include:Queering policy and planning in developmentQueer development critique and queer critiques of developmentGlobal LGBTIQ rightsQueer social movements and mobilizationsAt a time when development and human rights organizations such as the World Bank, Office of the UN Secretary General and Human Rights Watch are placing increasing importance on global LGBT rights, the Routledge Handbook of Queer Development Studies is an essential guide for scholars, upper level students, practitioners and anyone with an interest in global sexualities, gender identities, and expressions."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Abstract

"Jonathan Coley explores the unique pathways along which students join and work within movements for LGBT inclusion at Christian institutions of higher learning across the country. Having interviewed dozens of students in LGBT advocacy groups at four conservative, religious schools of different denominations, Coley is able to use students' own words to analyze their self-conceptions and activist tactics, while shedding new light on faith-based LGBT activism on college campuses. Moreover, Coley shows that there is no single pathway to activism and, perhaps most importantly, that religion and pro-LGBT activism are not mutually exclusive categories"--

Abstract

While millions feel politically marginalized, there is evidence that democracy is evolving into a conversation-based, public-centered practice called deliberative democracy. In this new form of democracy, public discussion, conscious reflection, and collective choice drive democratic governance and have the power to override democratic dysfunction. Illustrating this emerging possibility with examples from 28 years of US public engagement on LGBT equality, this book offers a practical model for the growth of deliberative democracy in which everyone can take part. It identifies the necessary social catalysts, the role of social networks and technology, and key pathways to addressing unconscious bias, hidden fears, and identity based polarization as they were overcome in the LGBT case. It demonstrates how each person can gain voice and influence in a deliberative democracy in which people once again become the true source of political power. This book will interest anyone who cares about the future of democracy.

Abstract

From gay and lesbian political activism during the 1960s and 70s through the 1980s queer movement inspired by the AIDS crisis to the recent push towards normalization for same-sex couples via registered partnerships and adoption rights, LGBT issues have been moving steadily into the political and cultural mainstream of the German-speaking lands. A host of German LGBT culture has emerged in recent years, including films and literary works. Queerness has also taken hold within the academy of the German-speaking lands. The present volume includes contributions exploring the representation and reality of LGBT individuals and issues in historical and contemporary German-speaking culture. Leanne Dawson is Lecturer in German at the University of Edinburgh.

Abstract

The LGBTI community in Turkey face real dangers. In 2015, the Turkish police interrupted the LGBTI Pride march in Istanbul, using tear gas and rubber bullets against the marchers. This marked the first attempt by the authorities to stop the parade by force, and similar actions occurred the following year. Here, Fait Muedini examines these levels of discrimination in Turkey, as well as exploring how activists are working to improve human rights for LGBTI individuals living in this hostile environment. Muedini bases his analysis on interviews taken with a number of NGO leaders and activists of leading LGBTI organisations in the region, including Lambda Istanbul, Kaos GL, Pembe Hayat, Social Policies, Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Studies Association (SPoD), and Families of LGBT's in Istanbul (LİSTAG). The original information provided by these interviews illuminate the challenges facing the LGBTI community, and the brave actions taken by activists in their attempts to challenge the state and secure sexual equality.

Abstract

As a clinician, you understand there's no one-size-fits-all approach for working with transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) clients. These clients each require unique treatment methods that address who they are in relation to the world. This comprehensive guide outlines the latest research and recommendations to provide you with the requisite knowledge, skills, and awareness to treat TGNC clients with competent and affirming care. You'll learn about the historical and cultural contexts of this population, as well as ethical and legal issues that can arise when networking with gender-diverse individuals in a clinical setting. You'll also find information about informed consent approaches, and referral for medical procedures such as hormone therapy or surgery. This book provides everything you need to enhance your practice and help your TGNC clients thrive. -- From publisher's description.
