"Technology, tourism, politics, and law have connected human beings around the world more closely than ever before, but this closeness has, paradoxically, given rise to fear, distrust, and misunderstanding between nation-states and religions. In light of the tensions and conflicts that arise from these complex relationships, many search for ways to find peace and understanding through a "global public sphere." There citizens can deliberate on issues of worldwide concern. Their voices can be heard by institutions able to translate public opinion into public policy that embraces more than simply the interests and ideas of the wealthy and the empowered. Contributors to this volume address various aspects of this challenge within the context of Bahá'í thought and practice, whose goal is to lay the foundations for a new world civilization that harmonizes the spiritual and material aspects of human existence. Une idée apparentée est que les croyances religieuses, qu'elles soient vraies ou fausses, permettent aux hommes et aux sociétés qui les entretiennent de s'élever d'une façon inaccessible à celles et ceux qui ne croient pas. D'après le mathématicien et philosophe anglais William Clifford (1845-1879), rien de tout cela n'est vrai. Ainsi qu'il le défend à Londres en 1876 dans une conférence intitulée "L'éthique de la croyance", le déclin de la religion est au contraire l'occasion de rendre l'humanité moralement meilleure. Plus encore : il n'est plus possible de croire sans immoralité. Son texte deviendra vite un classique ; en 1897, William James (1842-1910), philosophe et psychologue, entreprend de le réfuter. Dans "La volonté de croire", il veut légitimer les croyances les plus improuvables, du moment qu'elles répondent à nos besoins passionnels, tel celui "que le monde soit religieux". Historiquement, la réponse de James emporta la conviction de nombreux lecteurs dans sa tentative de concilier science et religion. Mais philosophiquement, il se pourrait bien que Clifford ait eu raison et que son éthique de la croyance d'après laquelle "on a tort, partout, toujours et qui que l'on soit, de croire sur la base d'éléments de preuve insuffisants" s'avère une boussole pour quiconque n'a pas renoncé à "se servir de son entendement"."

Hudson Taylor (1832-1905) war nicht nur Gründer der bekannten China Inland Mission, sondern er rief, ohne es zu beabsichtien, eine ganz neue Missionsbewegung ins Leben, die neue Kräfe für die Weltmission gewann. Weil er nie um Geld bat, sondern sich im Glauben auf Got verliess, nannte man diese Missionen "Glaubensmissionen." Im deutschsprachigen Raum werden sie of als "Evangelikale Missionen" bezeichnet, im englischsprachigen Raum als "Interdenominational Missionen." Sie stellen heute weltweit einen beträchtlichen Anteil der evangelischen Missionare. Ihre Rolle als eigenständiger Zweig der weltweiten Missionsbewegung wird of unterschätzt. Klaus Fiedler stellt die ersten Jahrzehnte der Geschichte der Glaubensmissionen dar und ihr Kirchenverständnis, wie interdenominationlle Missionen denominationlle Kirchen gründen, die heute weit über zehn Millionen Mitglieder haben. Dieses Buch ist eine revidierte und erweiterte Neuausgabe von "Ganz auf Vertrauen.
