Abstract

More than two million medical students, doctors and other health professionals around the globe have owned a copy of Davidson's Principles and Practice of Medicine since it was first published. Now in its 23rd Edition, this textbook describes the pathophysiology and clinical features of the most frequently encountered conditions in the major specialties of adult medicine and explains how to recognise, investigate, diagnose and manage them. Taking its origins from Sir Stanley Davidson's much-admired lecture notes, Davidson's has endured because it keeps pace with how modern medicine is taught and provides a wealth of information in an easy-to-read, concise and beautifully illustrated format. This book will serve readers everywhere as a core text that integrates medical science with clinical medicine, conveying key knowledge and practical advice in a highly accessible and readable format.Key FeaturesThe opening section describes the fundamentals of genetics, immunology, infectious diseases and population health, and discusses the core principles of clinical decision-making and good prescribing.A new second section on emergency and critical care medicine encompasses poisoning, envenomation and environmental medicine, and introduces a new chapter on acute medicine and critical illness. The third section covers the major medical specialties, each thoroughly revised and brought fully up to date. Two new chapters on maternal and adolescent/transition medicine complement the one on ageing and disease. A new chapter on medical ophthalmology has been included.Clinical Examination overviews summarise the main elements for each system and now feature in the biochemistry, nutrition and dermatology chapters.Presenting Problems sections provide a clear pathway for the assessment of and approach to the most common complaints in each specialty.Practice Point summaries detail the practical skills that medical students and junior doctors must acquire.Emergency boxes emphasise the core knowledge needed to manage acutely ill patients. In Old Age, In Pregnancy and In Adolescence boxes highlight differences in the practice of medicine in these patient groups, and illustrate the interfaces between medical, obstetric and paediatric services. The text is extensively illustrated, with over 1000 diagrams, clinical photographs, and radiology and pathology images. The global perspective is enhanced by an International Advisory Board of experts from 17 countries, and by authors from around the world.New to this EditionThe new second section on emergency and critical care medicine introduces a significantly expanded and comprehensive account of the approaches to dealing with acute medical and critical illness. Two new chapters on maternal and adolescent/transition medicine complement the one on ageing and disease by addressing problems encountered at key stages of patients' lives.A new chapter on medical ophthalmology has been included as a direct response to readers' requests. The opening chapter has been completely rewritten with a new focus on the important principles of clinical decision-making or clinical reasoning.A new internal text design for this 23rd Edition provides a simpler and clearer presentation of the various categories of text boxes.

Abstract

Abstract

Women are entering medical school in equal numbers as men, yet still face unique challenges in a profession where, overall, male physicians outnumber female physicians 3 to 1. Women in medicine also face decisions such as when to have a child during training and often struggle with work-life balance. This book features real stories and advice from mothers in medicine at all stages of training from medical student to practicing physician and addresses the topics that shape the lives, joys, and challenges of women in medicine today. The book is based on the best posts and wisdom shared on the Mothers in Medicine blog, which was established in 2008 by the editor and has published over 1500 posts and has over 4.8 million page views to date. The book is organized by themes that are unique to the physician-mother: career decisions, having children during training, navigating life challenges, practice issues, and work-life balance. Each chapter features an excerpt from the blog followed by an honest discussion of the key considerations, guidelines, and tips as related to each topic in the conversational, personal tone of the blog. The book concludes with a chapter that features the most popular questions posted on the Mothers in Medicine blog and a summary of the responses received from the community of readers. Mothers in Medicine: Career, Practice, and Life Lessons Learned is a valuable and contemporary resource for pre-medical students, medical students, residents, and physicians. .

Abstract

This book offers an up-to-date review on the principles and practice of multidimensional assessment and management of the older individual, which represents the cornerstone of modern clinical practice in the elderly. The early chapters cover the main elements and scope of the comprehensive geriatric approach and explain the pathways of care from screening and case finding through to in-depth assessment and treatment planning. Subsequent chapters review the evidence of how best to apply the multidimensional assessment and management approach in defined healthcare settings and within specific clinical areas, such as cancer and surgery. Finally, the education and training challenges are reviewed and the prospects for future clinical service and research in this important field are examined. The book is very timely given the recent advances in application of this approach, which reflect the growing international realization that older people are “core business” in many clinical areas where the role of specialist geriatric medicine has hitherto been limited. Accordingly, the book will be relevant to a wide range of clinicians. The authorship comprises many of the best known and widely published experts in their respective fields.

Abstract

This revised, updated second edition draws together the basic science, pathology, epidemiology and treatment possibilities in progressive multiple sclerosis. Each chapter addresses specific aspects of progressive multiple sclerosis providing an extensive review of the current literature and a discussion of the likely mechanisms of tissue injury relevant to the disease. New additions to the second edition include a description of clinical scales used to determine levels of disability; recent trials specifically directed at reducing disease progression; rehabilitation; and an in depth discussion of the similarities and differences between primary and secondary multiple sclerosis. The biological processes underlying disease progression are elucidated as are specific pathophysiological mechanisms. The basic science of axonal degeneration and the clinical understanding of progressive multiple sclerosis are discussed in the context of emerging and future therapies for disease progression as are trials which have been and will be conducted for progressive multiple sclerosis. An overview of biomarkers for the disease is included and existing symptomatic therapies for progressive multiple sclerosis are covered in detail. Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, Second Edition is ideal for both general neurologists and those with a specialist interest in multiple sclerosis. It will also be of interest to neurologists in training and other medical professionals treating this common disease.

Abstract

This unique and timely title offers a comprehensive assessment of the previously underappreciated risks and potentially overstated benefits of chronic opioid therapy. It does so by approaching the rampant problem of opioid abuse and addiction – currently labeled an epidemic in the United States -- from a public health/epidemiologic perspective. That is, following a thorough overview in Part 1 that compares (and contrasts) classic infectious disease epidemiology concepts with the epidemic, the book categorizes our current understanding of basic science and best clinical practices in opioid therapy in terms of Agent (opioid), Vector (prescriber) and Host (patient) factors. The majority of the book, which includes a plethora of instructional case studies, is organized according to these three arenas. Opioid Dependence: A Clinical and Epidemiologic Approach is designed to update all clinicians on opioid basic science, current areas of drug improvement research and development, alternatives to opioid therapy, evidence-based indications for opioid therapy, and clinical strategies for preventing and overcoming opioid dependence. Importantly, an overview of clinical practice guidelines from the American Society of Addiction Medicine, with its biopsychosocial-spiritual “multidimensional assessment” focus is provided, along with a discussion of medication-assisted treatment, organized by the three currently FDA-approved pharmacotherapeutics (methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone). Developed for practitioners at every level, this ground-breaking title offers a fresh and novel approach to improving the care and outcomes of patients receiving opioid therapy.
