Abstract

This book examines the challenges of low-noise amplifier (LNA) research and design in the millimeter-wave regime by dissecting the common LNA configurations and typical specifications into parts, which are then optimized separately over several chapters to suggest improvements in the current designs. Current trends towards increased wireless connectivity and the need to stay connected everywhere and all the time, call for extremely high data rates. Most of the wireless networks operate in frequency bands measured in low gigahertz. Typically, this is done through channels with moderate bandwidth. To keep up with the trends for increased data transmission rates, new and innovative ideas are needed. One of the areas of investigation is the transmission in millimeter-wave regime, ranging from 30 GHz to 300 GHz, where there is an abundance of bandwidth. The low-noise amplifier (LNA) is the first component that appears in the front ends of most microwave and millimeter-wave receivers after an antenna. The performance of a millimeter-wave receiver is therefore largely dependent on the performance of the LNA that is used. Primarily, the LNA is tasked with amplifying a signal while introducing as little noise into the signal as possible. This is a necessity, because the signal received by the antenna is already submerged in noise, thus the signal, before it can be processed, needs to be amplified with the smallest possible amount of additional noise introduced in this process. This is even more so true, due to the limitation of the wave propagation in millimeter-wave regime, where there is a trade-off between data-rate, range and power.

Abstract

Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is the central part and data hub in a manufacturing environment, connecting ERP and shop floor through horizontal and vertical integration. As a perfect example of modern and Industry 4.0 orientated MES, HYDRA is basically modular structured with plenty of standard functions covering all production areas and departments in a factory, such as machine connectivity, production management, production logistics, quality management, resource management, energy management, and HR. Collecting vast real-time production data is just the very first step, where many MES systems linger about. More important is to analyze and utilize mass production data, turning Big Data into Smart Data. MES Hydra offers various analysis tools and reports for the sake of efficiency and transparency. The authors Kletti, Jürgen, born in 1948, studied electrical engineering at the University of Karlsruhe, specializing in technical data processing. After completing his doctorate, he founded the company MPDV Mikrolab GmbH of which he is a partner and managing director today. In addition, Dr. Kletti lectures on corporate management and is a member of various professional committees. Deisenroth, Rainer, born in 1953, after graduating in technical informatics computer science has worked in various companies in the field of hardware and software development and also in product management. In 1990 he joined MPDV Mikrolab GmbH. Today he works there as Sales Director and member of the executive board. He has published numerous technical papers on the subject of MES.

Abstract

This updated, second edition provides readers with an expanded treatment of the FEM as well as new information on recent trends in rapid prototyping technology. The new edition features more descriptions, exercises, and questions within each chapter. In addition, more in-depth surface theory has been introduced in section four, with particular emphasis in surface theory. Promising cutting edge technologies in the area of rapid prototyping are introduced in section seven, MATLAB-based FEM analysis has been added in section eight, and development of the plan stress and plane strain stiffness equations are introduced as a new chapter. Revised and updated based on student feedback, Solid Modeling and Applications: Rapid Prototyping, CAD and CAE Theory is ideal for university students in various engineering disciplines as well as design engineers involved in product design, analysis, and validation. It equips them with an understanding of the theory and essentials and also with practical skills needed to apply this understanding in real world design and manufacturing settings. New edition expands sections on rapid prototyping, surface theory, plan stress and plane strain stiffness equations, and MATLAB-based FEM analysis; Introduces the theory and application of CAD, CAE, and rapid prototyping to students of mechanical or manufacturing engineers with little or no coding experience; Maximizes student capability applying theory-based solutions to practical problems; Increases students’ insight into concepts of each theory using mathematical problems; Reinforces student understanding of CAD/CAE theory with numerous examples and exercises throughout the book; Includes precoded spreadsheet exercises.

Abstract

Building Information Modeling (BIM) refers to the consistent and continuous use of digital information throughout the entire lifecycle of a built facility, including its design, construction and operation. In order to exploit BIM methods to their full potential, a fundamental grasp of their key principles and applications is essential. Accordingly, this book combines discussions of theoretical foundations with reports from the industry on currently applied best practices. The book’s content is divided into six parts: Part I discusses the technological basics of BIM and addresses computational methods for the geometric and semantic modeling of buildings, as well as methods for process modeling. Next, Part II covers the important aspect of the interoperability of BIM software products and describes in detail the standardized data format Industry Foundation Classes. It presents the different classification systems, discusses the data format CityGML for describing 3D city models and COBie for handing over data to clients, and also provides an overview of BIM programming tools and interfaces. Part III is dedicated to the philosophy, organization and technical implementation of BIM-based collaboration, and discusses the impact on legal issues including construction contracts. In turn, Part IV covers a wide range of BIM use cases in the different lifecycle phases of a built facility, including the use of BIM for design coordination, structural analysis, energy analysis, code compliance checking, quantity take-off, prefabrication, progress monitoring and operation. In Part V, a number of design and construction companies report on the current state of BIM adoption in connection with actual BIM projects, and discuss the approach pursued for the shift toward BIM, including the hurdles taken. Lastly, Part VI summarizes the book’s content and provides an outlook on future developments. The book was written both for professionals using or programming such tools, and for students in Architecture and Construction Engineering programs.

Abstract

This book offers a brief introduction to the general-purpose finite element program MSC Marc, focusing on providing simple examples, often single-element problems, which can easily be related to the theory that is discussed in finite element lectures. As such, it is an ideal companion book to classical introductory courses on the finite element method. MSC Marc is a specialized program for non-linear problems (implicit solver), which is distributed by the MSC Software Corporation and commonly used in academia and industry. The documentation of all finite element programs now includes a variety of step-by-step examples of differing complexity, and all software companies offer professional workshops on different topics. Since the first edition of the book, there have been several new releases of Marc/Mentat and numerous changes. This new edition incorporates the latest Marc/Mentat software developments and new examples.
