Abstract

The contributions in this volume critically engage with Mogens Müller's work on ancient Judaism, the Septuagint, the New Testament gospels, and the reception history of the Bible, covering a variety of topics within the field of biblical rewriting ad reception. Rewriting and reception are parts of a continuous process that began within biblical literature itself and have continued in the history of interpretative communities where the Bible has been received and cherished in innumerable ways until today. The present volume aims to further the scholarly debate on important topics within biblical studies. It demonstrates that the notion of reception can be addressed from a very different angles and fromdiverse hermeneutical and methodological viewpoints, all of which offer fresh insights into ancient texts and their afterlife -- Book cover.

Abstract

In this second volume, fifty-two more exegetical notes are assembled in three sections: Synoptic Gospels, Pauline Letters, and Ephesians. The notes on Ephesians cover the whole letter: structural analysis and thematic reflection. The aim of the other essays is to investigate the logic of a New Testament passage, mostly in reaction to a recent publication. Can we come closer to the sense intended by the biblical author? And what does this mean to us today?

Abstract

In Greek New Testament Manuscripts from Albania Didier Lafleur and Luc Brogly explore the riches of a unique collection of twenty-one Byzantine artefacts, among which the world-famous Beratinus 1 and Beratinus 2, both included by UNESCO in the Memory of the World Register. First described at the end of the 19th century by Anthimos Alexoudis, then revealed to Western scholarship by Pierre Batiffol, yet this collection has remained unknown to textual critics and no major analysis of it has been performed in over a century. Based on a fresh autopsy of the documents, the book describes the artefacts physically and analyses textual features and variant readings of each. This monograph will be of vital interest to any scholar or advanced student in the fields of Greek New Testament textual criticism and codicology.

Abstract

"The essays included in this volume present Larry W. Hurtado's steadfast analysis of the earliest Christian manuscripts. In these chapters Hurtado considers not only standard text-critical issues which seek to uncover an earliest possible version of a text, but also the manuscripts available to us themselves. Hurtado examines often overlooked 2nd and 3rd century artefacts, which are among the earliest manuscripts available, drawing fascinating conclusions about the features of early Christianity. The volume is divided into two parts. The first addresses text-critical and text-historical issues about the textual transmission of the New Testament writings. The second part looks at manuscripts as physical and visual artefacts themselves. Whilst these essays are presented together as a republished collection, Hurtado has made several updates across the collection to draw them together and to reflect on the developing nature of the issues they address since they were first written."--Back cover.

Abstract

Bringing together thirteen talks given at the international conference "Memory and Memories in Early Christianity", held at the Universities of Lausanne and Geneva in June 2016, this interdisciplinary volume explores a fresh problem in the study of the origins of Christianity and of the New Testament, namely the "work of memory" undertaken in the discourses and practices of the believers in Jesus. The studies collected here not aonly apply a heuristic analytical tool - "social memory theory" - to the literature and history of Christian beginnings, but also endeavour to show the socio-religious resonance of this "work of memory" in the language and ideology of the early believers. The historical Jesus, the Pauline writings, the Gospel of John, the Acts of the Apostles, Marcion, ancient Christian epistolography, Hegesippus, Irenaeus, etc. are explored by some of the world's top specialists in "Social memory studies" as applied to Christian origins -- Book Cover.

Abstract

This volume contributes to the study of the identity of Jesus, focusing on how he was originally perceived both by his contemporaries and in the earliest Christian writings. The essays include studies of methodology, archaeology, background, individual gospel perspectives, gospel relationships, intertextuality in the gospels, the earliest reception of the Jesus tradition in the post-Easter writings of the New Testament, and the missiological and pedagogical implications of Jesus' teaching. John Nolland is the reason for this volume, and his important writings on the gospels are its backdrop. -- ‡c From back cover.

Abstract

Back cover: "The Spirit Helps Our Weakness" examines the fundamental question of how precisely the Spirit aids the weakness of believers. After an initial discussion on the way Rom 8,26-27 has been interpreted, the study explores the central issues and conclusions in scholarship on the Romans debate. Building upon that scholarship, this study contends that Paul's purpose in writing the letter revolved around a missiological imperative, which permeates the letter. The second part of the work provides an exegetical analysis of Rom 8,26a, including the way in which the clause fits within its broader context, particularly within vv. 26-27. In light of Paul's missiological motivation, this study argues that the Spirit serves as activating agent to accomplish God's mission. Ultimately, the missiological nature of the Spirit, working within believers, underlines the priority for Paul's ministry and by extension, his purpose for writing the Letter to the Romans.

Abstract

Anatomies of the Gospels and Beyond is an edited volume structured around essays that focus on one of the four canonical Gospels (and Acts) and/or theoretical issues involved in literary readings of New Testament narrative. The volume is intended to honor the legacy of R. Alan Culpepper, Emeritus Professor and Former Dean at Mercer University’s McAfee School of Theology. The title of the volume (which alludes to the title of Culpepper’s ground-breaking monograph, Anatomy of the Fourth Gospel ) and the breadth of the essays are apt reflections of his research interests over his academic career of over forty years. The twenty-five contributors are internationally recognized experts in New Testament studies; thus, the essays represent a snapshot of current research.
