Tu as menti.

Australia's Impressionists' introduces a worldwide audience to Impressionism as it manifested itself in artistic movements beyond Europe. This catalogue features over 35 paintings, including important masterpieces by Australia's leading artists, many of which have never previously been shown outside the country. In 1889 a group of artists working in Melbourne opened the '9 by 5 Impression Exhibition', an ambitious display that sought to introduce local society to their version of Impressionism. These artists - Tom Roberts, Charles Conder, Arthur Streeton - presented some 180 oil sketches. Many of these scenes of contemporary life, using a vividly coloured palette, were painted on panels, from cigar boxes, of around 9 x 5 inches, which gave the show its name. In fact these pictures owed more to Whistler, whose works Roberts had seen in London in 1884, than to French Impressionism. Drawing on a wider interest in national identity among the non-Indigenous population, Conder, Roberts and Streeton championed a new Australian landscape style. 00This drew on the practices of European plein-air artists, but the resulting pictures became larger and more ambitious in manner; paintings of the leisured lifestyle offered by Sydney Harbour are recorded with cheerful pride, while scenes of the bush - albeit never too far from the city - are elevated to a mode of heroic myth. John Peter Russell, a friend and correspondent of Roberts, was born and died in Sydney, but spent some 40 years as an expatriate in Europe. Russell spent his working life in the company of Van Gogh, Monet and Rodin. While his talents as a colourist made a deep impression on the young Matisse, his innovative art was only rediscovered in the later twentieth century. - Exhibition: The National Gallery, London, UK (07.12.2016-26.03.2017)

This book provides a clear and concise account of the main principles of administrative law. It sets those principles in historical, comparative and constitutional perspective. Principles of Administrative Law guides the reader through the complexities of the current law and provides an account of how it developed and where it might go in the years to come. This book tells not only what administrative law is but also what it is about. Unlike a traditional textbook, Principles of Administrative Law offers an uncluttered statement of the essentials of the subject. Unlike an 'outline' or 'introduction', however, it uses this statement of the basics as the foundation for an exploration of the law's origins and conceptual foundations and of its institutional and constitutional context. In addition, it covers various important topics not found in other administrative law books for students. It is a significant addition to the literature on Australian administrative law, and meets a real need for a short book that is both broad and deep in its treatment of this increasingly topical area of law.

Since the very early years of anthropology, Australian Aboriginal kinship has fascinated researchers in the field as well as theorists. Its complexity is considerable and, as some have remarked, its mechanical and logical beauty is astonishing. This complexity has however discouraged many scholars, students and people working in Aboriginal communities from actively and intellectually engaging with indigenous ways of conceiving and producing relationships based on kinship, despite the fact that it is a domain deeply embedded in everyday life and interaction. This handbook attempts to bring the principles of kinship in general, and Australian Aboriginal kinship in particular, closer to the reader in an understandable and pedagogic way. Aimed at Aboriginal people themselves, students in the social sciences and humanities or, in fact, any other person eager to learn more about Aboriginal Australia, while also discussing some issues of interest to even accomplished anthropologists, the book is divided into four general parts each tackling specific questions. Part 1 deals with the historical and ethnographic background against which the discussions on kinship are framed in later sections. Important concepts in anthropology such as 'culture' or 'hunter-gatherer societies' are looked at. Part 2 develops the basic tools and concepts needed to understand kinship. It discusses its main domains, such as terminology, marriage, descent and filiation. Part 3 applies the material considered up to this point to actual ethnographic examples from the Australian Western Desert and elaborates on other important concepts such as 'family', 'household' and 'domestic group'. Part 4 explains social organisation and, in particular, generational moieties, patri- and matrimoieties, sections and subsections, all of which are central to Aboriginal peoples' ways of interacting. Finally, the concluding chapter discusses in a more critical fashion the concept of kinship itself ad elaborates on the…

The Oxford Handbook of the Australian Constitution offers a critical analysis of some of the most significant aspects of Australian constitutional arrangements, setting them against the historical, legal, political, and social contexts in which Australia's constitutional system has developed. It takes care to highlight the distinctive features of the Australian constitutional system by placing the Australian system, where possible, in a global perspective. Constitutional law provides the legal framework for the Australian political and legal systems, and thus touches almost every aspect of Australian life. The chapters are arranged in seven thematically grouped parts. The first, ‘Foundations’, deals with aspects of Australian history which have influenced constitutional arrangements. The second, ‘Constitutional Domain’, addresses the interaction between the Constitution and other relevant legal systems and orders, including the common law, international law, and State Constitutions. The third, ‘Themes’, identifies themes of special constitutional significance, including the legitimacy of the Constitution, citizenship, and republicanism. The fourth, ‘Practice and Process’, deals with practical issues relevant to constitutional litigation, including the processes, techniques, and authority of the High Court of Australia. The final three parts deal with the structural building blocks of the Australian constitutional system: ‘Separation of Powers’, ‘Federalism’, and ‘Rights’.
