"O Estado do Rio de Janeiro atravessa sua pior crise fiscal, com desdobramentos em outras dimensões, dentre as quais destacamos a insegurança pública. As instituições públicas estaduais estão colocadas em xeque porque várias autoridades respondem por crimes de corrupção. O desemprego é o mais intenso entre as unidades da federação, o que tem sido agravado pelo atraso no pagamento de servidores e fornecedores do setor público. A sociedade experimenta grande perplexidade diante desse cenário, que se seguiu ao ambiente vibrante do período que antecedeu a realização das Olimpíadas de 2016. Como foi possível realizar tão importante evento e enfrentar uma situação tão adversa? O livro discute esse cenário sob uma abordagem dialógica que inclui a economia, as ciências sociais, a geografia e o direito. The streets of Rio de Janeiro have long been characterized as exuberant and exotic places for social commerce, political expression, and the production and dissemination of culture. The Street is Ours examines the changing uses and meanings of Rio de Janeiro's streets and argues that the automobile, by literally occupying much of the street's space and by introducing death and injury on a new scale, significantly transformed the public commons. Once viewed as a natural resource and a place of equitable access, deep meaning, and diverse functions, the street has changed into a space of exclusion that prioritizes automotive movement. Taking an environmental approach, Shawn William Miller surveys the costs and failures of this spatial transformation and demonstrates how Rio's citizens have resisted the automobile's intrusions and, in some cases, even reversed the long trend of closing the street against its potential utilities.

The Brazilian television industry is one of the most productive and commercially successful in the world. At the forefront of this industry is TV Globo and its production of standardized telenovelas, which millions of Brazilians and viewers from over 130 countries watch nightly. Eli Lee Carter examines the field of television production by focusing on the work of one of Brazil's greatest living directors, Luiz Fernando Carvalho. Through an emphasis on Carvalho's thirty-plus year career working for TV Globo, his unique mode of production, and his development of a singular aesthetic as a reaction to the dominant telenovela genre, Carter sheds new light on Brazilian television's history, its current state, and where it is going--as new legislation and technology push it increasingly toward a post-network era.
