In a time of war, what is the shape of love? Saba arrives in an East African refugee camp as a young girl, devastated to have been wrenched from her school and forced to abandon her books as her family flees to safety. In this unfamiliar, crowded and often hostile community, she must carve out a new existence. As she struggles to maintain her sense of self, she remains fiercely protective of her mute brother, Hagos each sibling resisting the roles gender and society assign. Through a cast of complex, beautifully drawn characters, Sulaiman Addonia questions what it means to be a man, to be a woman, to be an individual when circumstance has forced the loss of all that makes a home or a future. Addonia has written an insiders view of the textures of life in a refugee camp. Both intimate and epic, this subversive tale of transgression dissects society s ability to wage war on its own women and explores the stories we must tell to survive in a broken, inhospitable environment.

Bron: https://www.bol.com/nl/f/zijn-naam-was-youssef/9200000095628507/?country=BE

Palestinian refugees' experience of protracted displacement is among the lengthiest in history. In her breathtaking new book, Ilana Feldman explores this community's engagement with humanitarian assistance over a seventy-year period and their persistent efforts to alter their present and future conditions. Based on extensive archival and ethnographic field research, Life Lived in Relief offers a comprehensive account of the Palestinian refugee experience living with humanitarian assistance in many spaces and across multiple generations. By exploring the complex world constituted through humanitarianism, and how that world is experienced by the many people who inhabit it, Feldman asks pressing questions about what it means for a temporary status to become chronic. How do people in these conditions assert the value of their lives? What does the Palestinian situation tell us about the world? Life Lived in Relief is essential reading for anyone interested in the history and practice of humanitarianism today.

Generosity and Refugees: The Kosovars in Exile is a work of history studying the social and political context encountered by Kosovar refugees fleeing their homeland to Australia at the height of the NATO-led war against Serbian forces in 1999. The flight of the Kosovar refugees changed Australia's asylum seeker policy forever, and a new test for international humanitarianism had begun. Today refugee crises globally beg the international community to embrace a generosity of spirit. A question this book asks is whether there are limits to generosity, inhibited by nationally contextual and historical perspectives. Generosity and Refugees examines the role of the media in framing public understandings of refugees with intriguing parallels for understanding the contemporary political climate internationally.

None of these cruelties represent extraordinary violence. They reflect day-to-day implementation of laws and regulations around the globe. Every page of the book questions our current world of walls and fences, police tactics and prison cells, crowd control and refugee camps. The dry and factual style of storytelling through technical drawings is the graphic equivalent to bureaucratic rigidity born of laws and regulations. The level of detail depicted in the illustrations of the book mirror the repressive efforts taken by authorities around the globe
