Over the course of the twentieth century, dozens of British refugee camps housed hundreds of thousands of displaced people from across the globe. Unsettled explores the hidden world of these camps and traces the complicated relationships that emerged between refugees and citizens.

Le camp de Moria se situe à Lesbos, une île grecque paradisiaque. Environ six mille réfugiés s'y entassent, échoués là après un voyage effroyable, entrepris avec ce qu'il leur restait d'espoir. Mais là-bas, c'est nulle part, c'est l'attente interminable. Les enfants jouent parmi les déchets. Les malades ne sont soignés qu'avec du paracétamol. Les familles s'entassent dans des containers ou des tentes de fortune. Plusieurs réfugiés meurent de froid en hiver. Le grillage est leur seul horizon. Certains d'entre eux refusent de croire qu'ils sont en Europe. Marie Doutrepont, avocate bénévole au sein d'une ONG, s'y est rendue pour apporter une assistance juridique de première ligne aux demandeurs d'asile. De ce quotidien bouleversant, elle écrira des lettres poignantes à ses proches. Ces échanges seront son paracétamol à elle, son exutoire, son "absolue nécessité".

'Als argument om vluchtelingen strenger aan te pakken, verwijzen sommige mensen naar ''de toestanden in Calais''. Wie van de regeringsleden was ooit in het vluchtelingenkamp in Calais of in Duinkerke? Want als je een tweede Calais angstvallig wilt vermijden, moet je weten waarover e spreekt. Ik was er wel. Ik heb er, net als vele andere vrijwilligers, de handen vuilgemaakt én uitgestoken op een van de schrijnendste plekken die ik ooit zag. De leefomstandigheden waren mensonterend. Ze zijn nog niet veranderd, want vandaag verblijven nog steeds duizenden mensen in dergelijke kampen in Noord-Frankrijk. Er zijn mensen gestorven na gevechten om een bakje rijst. Kinderen, mannen en vrouwen zaten in barakken en tentjes, tussen de ratten. Duizendenmensen zonder middelen op elkaar gepakt, met honger en afhankelijk van de goodwill van vrijwilligers.' Generosity and Refugees: The Kosovars in Exile is a work of history studying the social and political context encountered by Kosovar refugees fleeing their homeland to Australia at the height of the NATO-led war against Serbian forces in 1999. The flight of the Kosovar refugees changed Australia's asylum seeker policy forever, and a new test for international humanitarianism had begun. Today refugee crises globally beg the international community to embrace a generosity of spirit. A question this book asks is whether there are limits to generosity, inhibited by nationally contextual and historical perspectives. Generosity and Refugees examines the role of the media in framing public understandings of refugees with intriguing parallels for understanding the contemporary political climate internationally.

L'architecte néerlandais Theo Deutinger propose, à travers un travail iconographique, ce qu’il identifie comme l’expression quotidienne des tyrannies et cruautés du 21e siècle : murs, clôtures, barricades, cellules de prison, matériels de contrôle des foules, camps de réfugiés, démolition, façons de faire circuler les animaux dans les abattoirs et d'autres dispositifs destinés à contraindre la liberté Handbook of Tyranny' portrays the routine cruelties of the twenty-first century through a series of detailed non-fictional graphic illustrations. None of these cruelties represent extraordinary violence. They reflect day-to-day implementation of laws and regulations around the globe. Every page of the book questions our current world of walls and fences, police tactics and prison cells, crowd control and refugee camps. The dry and factual style of storytelling through technical drawings is the graphic equivalent to bureaucratic rigidity born of laws and regulations. The level of detail depicted in the illustrations of the book mirror the repressive efforts taken by authorities around the globe
