Manuel Aires Mateus, founder of the eponymous architectural practice claims, 'The design of a house always represents a sort of research project - it is intense, because of the familiarity we have with the plan ; it is unique, for the specificity and peculiarity of each situation. Indeed, the house is the plan we are all most familiar with. Starting from well-de ned constraints and possibilities, each house materialises through its construction, its function and appearance de ning its character. The question of materiality becomes crucial, as it limns the boundaries, circumscribes the eld of forces and brings a new centrality.' This book gathers the main single family house designs developed by Aires Mateus since the late nineties to the present.

For design professionals and students of architecture, 'Dirk Denison 10 Houses' draws attention to the manifold ways in which life experiences at all scales nurture and shape a career in the field, but the book is an engaging read for anyone interested in the gratifying process of building one's own home.

"Forget the McMansions; budgets aren't what they used to be, houses are smaller, and lifestyles are changing rapidly. Clients today want to create a home that is easy to maintain, environmentally responsible, and inexpensive to operate. Own less, live more. Ranging from glass cabins to copper-clad tree houses, Small Innovative Houses features an international collection of more than fifty residential homes in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. How to use flexible space and make the most of a narrow lot, how to use every square foot of living space, while also responding to rising ecological concerns and skyrocketing energy bills. Examples include a mountain barn converted into a modern vacation home in Switzerland; a mobile home built on a flatbed trailer chassis that can be transported on U.S. highways; a Japanese sunken house with moveable partitions that create as many as nine rooms; a summer cabin in Norway that appears to float above the ground; and a spectacular glass cabin in the wilds of Alberta, Canada. From world-famous architects (Steven Holl, Snøhetta and Tadao Ando) to the freshest new talent, this book reveals architectural invention on a whole new small scale."--Page 2 of cover

Wood is one of the best materials for construction on account of its versatility. Among its other outstanding features are its great capacity as a thermal and acoustic insulator, its remarkable ecological character, warm appearance, luminosity and comfort, as well as its pleasant texture and feel. For these reasons, architects and designers use this noble material which offers infinite possibilities for exterior design and decoration. Today, the new planning criteria for sustainable housing benefit from an inexhaustible source of ideas based on products derived from wood. Furthermore, the great variety of available wood and the fact that it is easy to recycle, facilitate the construction of masterful and varied designs. New ways of joining and fixing have been formulated thanks to modern technology. This book presents a selection of thirty of the most relevant international architects who work with wood. It shows different types of construction which unify traditional design with the different styles of modern creations. Focused on the use of wood, the explanatory texts and drawing plans clearly explain the characteristics of wood and its use in sophisticated projects.

'Renovation & Transformation' is a new book from Vandkunsten Architects. It covers nine current renovation projects in the form of renovations of monotonous concrete buildings, transformations of so-called 'ghetto areas', large-scale renovations of 1001 sheds with focus on process and recycling, as well as business- and cultural houses that are transformed and upgraded to new and longer lives. Each project is presented with a short text, images, illustrations and drawings. The book is part of a series of publications about the current projects of the studio, which are representative of its work throughout the years. Its intention is to inspire others in the business - architects, builders, advisors, students, and so on - through a somewhat more in-depth introduction to some of the projects of the studio.
