Abstract

"The 19th century was an era of rapidly accelerating scientific discovery and invention that laid the groundwork for the technological advances of the 20th century as well as important social and political reforms. This 2-volume set offers in-depth analysis of a broad range of historical documents, including legal codes, letters, speeches, constitutions, reports, and books that impacted the world throughout the nineteenth century, from the Napoleonic code to Darwin's Descent of Man. The 19th Century offers in-depth analysis of a broad range of historical documents and historic events that make up the story of a century during which slavery is abolished and the Industrial Revolution gives rise to the middle class. The fervor of the early days of the French Revolution has begun to wane, and Napoleon works to strike an accord with Pope Pius VII. England continues its program of empire building in Asia, while unrest and the potato famine bring on calls for Irish Home Rule. Revolutions and rebellions in China change the global balance of power away from that nation for more than a century. Communism and Marxism are on the rise, and in the United States, nation-building continues with the Louisiana and Alaska purchases." -- Publisher's description

Abstract

Difficult as it is to imagine today, in 1937 America's two leading media companies fought over the right to perform Shakespeare for an American radio audience in an attempt to bring prestige to their networks. The resulting fourteen broadcasts are among the more remarkable recreations of Shakespeare of their time. This lively and engaging book shows the cultural dominance of radio in the 1930s, and tells the story of why the networks each wanted to lord Shakespeare's prestige over the other, how they put their series together, the critical reception, and the cultural impact and legacies of the broadcasts.

Abstract

The Legacy of 9/11 features forty-four documents that span over a century, from the D'Arcy Oil Concession in 1901, the Charter of the Arab League in 1945, activist Sayyid Qutb's thoughts on jihad published following his execution in Egypt in 1966, Osama bin Laden's Declaration of Jihad against the U.S. in 1996, the Proclamation of the Caliphate in 2014, and Donald Trump's executive orders, perceived by some as a way to prevent Muslims from entering the U.S., in 2017. Each document is supported by a critical essay, written by historians and teachers, that includes a Summary Overview, Defining Moment, Author Biography, Document Themes and Analysis. An important feature of each essay is a close reading and analysis of the primary source that develops broader themes, such as the author's rhetorical purpose, social or class position, point of view, and other relevant issues. In addition, essays are organized by sections, listed above, for a greater sense of context. Each section begins with a brief introduction that defines questions and problems underlying the subjects addressed in the historical documents. Each essay also includes a Bibliography and Additional Reading section for further research.

Candidates, issues, and campaign styles have changed dramatically over time, from the front porch approach of the presidential campaigns of the 1800s to the social media campaigns of today. Political debates aren't limited simple to presidential campaigns, and this work examines how this American institution has shaped the government and its policies on personal, local, state, and national levels --
