"Francis J. Grund, a German emigrant, was one of the most influential journalists in America in the three decades preceding the Civil War. He also wrote several books, including Aristocracy in America (1839), a fictional, satiric travel memoir written in response to Alexis de Tocqueville's famous Democracy in America. However, Grund's political work and life have never been analyzed in depth. In his introduction to this long out-of-print work, Armin Mattes provides a thorough account of Grund's dynamic engagement in American political life, and brings to light many of Grund's reflections on American social and political life previously published only in German. Comparing Aristocracy in America with Tocqueville's Democracy in America, Mattes shows how Grund's work can expand our understanding of the emerging democratic political culture and society in the antebellum United States"--Provided by publisher.

Donald Trump’s election has called into question many fundamental assumptions about politics and society. Should the forty-fifth president of the United States make us reconsider the nature and future of the global order? Collecting a wide range of perspectives from leading political scientists, historians, and international-relations scholars, Chaos in the Liberal Order explores the global trends that led to Trump’s stunning victory and the impact his presidency will have on the international political landscape.Contributors situate Trump among past foreign policy upheavals and enduring models for global governance, seeking to understand how and why he departs from precedents and norms. The book considers key issues, such as what Trump means for America’s role in the world; the relationship between domestic and international politics; and Trump’s place in the rise of the far right worldwide. It poses challenging questions, including: Does Trump’s election signal the downfall of the liberal order or unveil its resilience? What is the importance of individual leaders for the international system, and to what extent is Trump an outlier? Is there a Trump doctrine, or is America’s president fundamentally impulsive and scattershot? The book considers the effects of Trump’s presidency on trends in human rights, international alliances, and regional conflicts. With provocative contributions from prominent figures such as Stephen M. Walt, Andrew J. Bacevich, and Samuel Moyn, this timely collection brings much-needed expert perspectives on our tumultuous era.

"Editing Mediaeval Texts from a Different Angle contains a selection of papers delivered at two workshops devoted to particular cases of text editing: the ATTEMT Workshop held at King's College, London (19-20 December 2013) explored issues involved in the edition of texts with a multilingual tradition (covering Greek, Latin, Syriac, Arabic, and Slavonic), while the ATTEST Workshop (University of Regensburg, 11-12 December 2015) dealt with tradition and innovation in the field of palaeoslavistic text editing. Central to the discussions reflected in this volume are general questions on variability, textual dependency and transformation, as well as methodological issues raised by the encounter of different scholarly traditions in ecdotics and by the advent of the digital. The volume opens with a honorary section for Prof. Francis J. Thomson, who in his influential scholarly work has focused on mediaeval Slavonic translation literature. The section not only contains his rich academic bibliography, but also a chronological Checklist of Slavonic Translations from the 9thcentury up to the immediate post-Petrine period (1725-1730)."--

Nowadays, data is coming fast and in a huge volume. This has created a need to accelerate traditional modeling techniques. The first purpose of this work is to speed-up the Fixed Size LS-SVM model using parallel computing. To this end, we begin with profiling the algorithm. From this analysis, it appears that using GPU-Acceleration seems particularly well-adapted. Our resulting implementation products a 5-times speed-up on our personal computer, compared to the CPU version. The second purpose is to scale-up the algorithm for massive data analysis. By computing matrices in blocks and delegating the work to the GPU, we are able to tune and train a classifier for a dataset of 20 millions points and 2 dimensions in less than 8 hours. With 6 GB of available memory, one should reach up to 100 millions records and 15 dimensions.
