The Oxford Handbook of the Epistemology of Theology brings together leading scholars in the fields of theology and epistemology to examine and articulate what can be categorized as appropriate epistemic evaluation in theology. Part one focuses on some of the epistemic concepts that have been traditionally employed in theology such as knowledge of God, revelation and scripture, reason and faith, experience, and tradition. This section also considers concepts that have not received sufficient epistemological attention in theology, such as saints, authority, ecclesial practices, spiritual formation, and discernment. Part two concentrates on epistemic concepts that have received significant attention in contemporary epistemology and can be related to theology such as understanding, wisdom, testimony, virtue, evidence, foundationalism, realism/antirealism, scepticism, and disagreement. Each chapter provides an analysis of the crucial moves, positions, and debates, while also identifying relevant epistemic considerations. The Reformation was essentially a religious renewal of Christianity in Europe. As such, it has contributed decisively, along with the Renaissance and humanism, to the formation of a secular modernity. What exactly was this contribution and how is it to be assessed? Have Reformation movements destroyed the traditional unity of the church and the state, of society and culture, and in so doing instigated the marginalisation of Christianity in Europe? Or have they brought central impulses of Christianity to the fore, without which Western modernity could not developed, and which also characterise a society that understands itself as secular in a plural late modern era? The present volume attempts to shed light on these controversial questions. Criticisms levelled at reformed traditions by the secular modernism standpoint as well as those aimed at European modernity and late-modernity from the camp of reformed thinking are also given a voice.

Cet ouvrage rassemble trente-six études consacrées à l’ecclésiologie et l’œcuménisme. Ces articles ou chapitres de livres ont été publiés entre 1992 et 2015. Ils sont regroupés en six parties: I. Ecclésiologie, II. Marie, III. Œcuménisme, IV. Dialogue catholique-protestant, V. Dialogue catholique-orthodoxe, VI. Vatican II. Il n’est pas possible aujourd’hui de réfléchir théologiquement sur l’Église en dehors d’une perspective œcuménique. Telle est la conviction profonde de l’auteur, qui sous-tend l’ensemble des travaux ici réunis. À l’âge d’un rapprochement inédit entre les différentes confessions chrétiennes, comment un théologien catholique pourrait-il penser l’Église sans entrer en dialogue avec les autres traditions ecclésiales et se laisser interpeller par elles? Les grands débats ecclésiologiques et œcuméniques qui ont jalonné les deux dernières décennies sont ainsi reflétés et abordés théologiquement. Cela va de la «démocratie» et synodalité dans l’Église au statut des femmes en son sein. Toutes ces questions inhérentes à la vie de l’Église catholique sont loin d’être sans répercussion sur les relations de celle-ci avec les autres Églises chrétiennes et sur la possibilité d’un rétablissement de la communion avec elles. Réciproquement, les questions qui se posent entre Églises, on l’a expérimenté depuis quelques années, se posent aussi, et peut-être d’abord, en chacune d’entre elles. C’est dire une fois encore la solidarité entre ecclésiologie et œcuménisme.
