Hermeneutic philosophies of social science offer an approach to the philosophy of social science foregrounding the human subject and including attention to history as well as a methodological reflection on the notion of reflection, including the intrusions of distortions and prejudice. Hermeneutic philosophies of social science offer an explicit orientation to and concern with the subject of the human and social sciences. Hermeneutic philosophies of the social science represented in the present collection of essays draw inspiration from Gadamer’s work as well as from Paul Ricoeur in addition to Michel de Certeau and Michel Foucault among others. Special attention is given to Wilhelm Dilthey in addition to the broader phenomenological traditions of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger as well as the history of philosophy in Plato and Descartes. The volume is indispensible reading for students and scholars interested in epistemology, philosophy of science, social social studies of knowledge as well as social studies of technology.

Les auteurs de cet ouvrage mettent en relief, tout en questionnant, les différents processus spatio-temporels, favorisant l'émergence et la présentation de l'oeuvre d'art, étirée, voire écartelée jusqu'à deux extrémités : son unité idéelle et la variété de ses apparitions. Phenomenologies of Scripture addresses two increasingly convergent disciplines: philosophy and biblical studies. On the one hand, the recent “theological turn” in phenomenology has established religion as a legitimate area of phenomenological inquiry. If that turn is to be enduringly successful, phenomenology must pay attention to the scriptures on which religious life, practice, and thought are based. On the other hand, biblical studies finds itself in a methodological morass. Contemporary approaches to scripture have raised important questions about the meaning and function of scriptural texts that phenomenology is uniquely positioned to answer: How is the meaning of a text constructed or gleaned? How can the divine be present in human words? Is a scientific approach to the Bible still possible? Bringing together essays by eight of today’s most prominent philosophers of religion with responses by two leading biblical scholars, Phenomenologies of Scripture reestablishes the possibility of fruitful, dialectical exchange between fields that demand to be read together.

Long description: In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat das Interesse am Denken des italienischen Rechtswissenschaftlers und Philosophen Emilio Betti zugenommen -- dennoch bleibt noch vieles zu entdecken, vor allem auf dem Gebiet der kunsthistorischen Hermeneutik. Von großer Relevanz in diesem Kontext ist die einzige Schrift, in der Bettis Hermeneutik zur Interpretation von bildender Kunst herangezogen wurde. Sie stammt von Hans Sedlmayr, dem bedeutenden Kunsthistoriker und Vertreter der Neuen Wiener Schule. In Sedlmayrs umfassendem Werk ist es zwar der einzige Beitrag, in dem Betti erwähnt wird, die Hinweise auf Bettis Theorie der Interpretation treten jedoch in einer solchen Häufigkeit auf, dass Betti hier zweifellos der wichtigste Dialogpartner war. Betti seinerseits war ein aufmerksamer Leser Sedlmayrs. Er stellt den österreichischen Kunsthistoriker in die Reihe der zahlreichen Denker, die für ihn Quelle vielfältiger ergiebiger Anregungen waren. Das zeigt sich insbesondere in den Überlegungen zur modernen Kunst in Bettis Hauptwerk Teoria generale della interpretazione. Dieser Zusammenhang ist bislang unbeachtet geblieben: Bis heute konnte man weder auf der Seite der Betti-Rezeption noch auf der Seite der Sedlmayr-Forschung erkennen, dass die beiden Denker, wenn auch unabhängig voneinander, einen Dialog auf Distanz geführt haben. Diese Auseinandersetzung ist Gegenstand der vorliegenden Monographie: Sie wird hier nicht nur vom historischen Standpunkt aus betrachtet, sondern auch auf einer theoretischen Ebene. Diese Studie versteht sich als Beitrag zur internationalen Debatte über den Stellenwert und die Tragweite der Hermeneutik für die Geisteswissenschaften auf der Grundlage einer erkenntniskritischen Fragestellung.
