Abstract

"Avalanche is a book whose visual theme might be avalanches, but whose overarching manoeuvre is disruption, distortion and transformation. The book consists of a series of monochrome photographs of avalanches that have been run repeatedly through a scanner until the original motifs only appear as faint traces. Takizawa presents a beautiful collapse of signified into signifier as the pictures of avalanches in turn is exposed to a digital avalanche – the pictures appear stretched, smeared, abstracted, as things slide beneath the gaze. Avalanche is low-key, almost zine-like in its execution, but that is one of the qualities that enhance its singularity."--

Abstract

This book reflects the latest research results in computer modelling of landslide-induced debris flows. The book establishes an understanding of the initiation and propagation mechanisms of landslides by means of numerical simulations, so that mitigation strategies to reduce the long-term losses from landslide hazards can be devised. In this context, the book employs the Discrete Element Method (DEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to investigate the mechanical and hydraulic behaviour of granular materials involved in landslides – an approach that yields meaningful insights into the flow mechanisms, concerning e.g. the mobilization of sediments, the generation and dissipation of excess pore water pressures, and the evolution of effective stresses. As such, the book provides valuable information, useful methods and robust numerical tools that can be successfully applied in the field of debris flow research.

Abstract

This book provides a short, hands-on introduction to the science of complexity using simple computational models of natural complex systems-with models and exercises drawn from physics, chemistry, geology, and biology. By working through the models and engaging in additional computational explorations suggested at the end of each chapter, readers very quickly develop an understanding of how complex structures and behaviors can emerge in natural phenomena as diverse as avalanches, forest fires, earthquakes, chemical reactions, animal flocks, and epidemic diseases.Natural Complexity provides the necessary topical background, complete source codes in Python, and detailed explanations for all computational models. Ideal for undergraduates, beginning graduate students, and researchers in the physical and natural sciences, this unique handbook requires no advanced mathematical knowledge or programming skills and is suitable for self-learners with a working knowledge of precalculus and high-school physics.Self-contained and accessible, Natural Complexity enables readers to identify and quantify common underlying structural and dynamical patterns shared by the various systems and phenomena it examines, so that they can form their own answers to the questions of what natural complexity is and how it arises.

Abstract

"Seismic City argues that the disaster of 1906 must be understood as part of the ordinary relationship between the city and its natural surroundings. Despite its short-term drama and immediate impact on people's lives, the 1906 earthquake and fire did not transform the history of San Francisco. Instead, San Franciscans rapidly incorporated the crisis into pre-existing debates about urban ecology, urban development, and social relations in the city. In the modern era, Americans have generally viewed 'natural' disasters as anomalous, exceptional events. Interpreting disasters as unpredictable 'acts of nature' that represent a disruption of ordinary life has justified a failure to adequately plan for disasters and concealed the ways in which social factors such as poverty play as much of a role in causing disasters as the geological or meteorological events that precipitate crises. By applying these insights to a close study of San Francisco's 1906 earthquake, including the decades leading up to the disaster and the city's recovery in the years after 1906, this project demonstrates how disaster and recovery became integrated into San Francisco's history, rather than transforming the city, and makes an important contribution to the interdisciplinary field of natural disaster studies"--Provided by publisher.
