Abstract

"Clouds, electronics, fog, bugs, glass, cellophane, rust, weeds, waves, particles… Mike Slack delves into an overheated terrestrial ecosystem in The Transverse Path, surveying a luminous topography of monumental details and mundane vistas with cosmic curiosity. Transcendental in mood, Slack’s vaguely sci-fi photographs envision a sun-blasted wilderness of synthetic and organic stuff, all tangled together, flourishing and disintegrating on its own terms, as if engaged in an ageless negotiation (or flirtation?) just beyond our grasp. Where does nature end and its opposite begin? And where do people figure into this balance? Made primarily around the American southwest from 2011 to 2017, these vivid compositions — like a series of thought-bubbles in search of a narrative — are concise and direct, yet driven by an emotional ambivalence that hovers between stark environmental dread and calm intimate reverie"--from publisher's website.

Abstract

Ruth Kaplan's journey began in the nudist hot springs of California in 1991. By participating in the baths, Kaplan gradually became accepted, and was able to make photographs of her fellow bathers, occupying the dual role of voyeur and participant. From California she then traveled to Eastern Europe, seeking a more traditional form of the practice in the spa towns of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, and Romania. The unique display of individual body types and ages became a component of the work, as did the decaying architecture of the interiors. She then traveled to higher-tech spas in Germany, France, Italy, and Denmark, completing the series in 2002 in Moroccan hamams and Icelandic hot springs.0Hedonism, decadence, sensuality, innocence, and social bonding were some of the underlying themes that emerged, but what drew Kaplan to the baths was the powerful physicality, the way in which people manifested themselves through their bodies, and the psychological presence they evoked. The waters became a backdrop to this exploration. With the migration from analog to digital that took hold during the 1990s, and escalating concerns surrounding individual privacy, these photographs have come to stand as a unique document of a subject difficult to photograph at the best of times, but nearly impossible to achieve currently without staging them. Along with the bizarre juxtapositions of body and place that sometimes occurred, these images reveal and celebrate the experience of immersion into water-physicality and transcendence.

Abstract

Borrowing its title from the Wallace Stevens poem in which "little existed for him but the few things / for which a fresh name always occurred," 'Local Objects' presents a beautiful yet remarkably unassuming body of work by Brooklyn/central Illinois-based photographer Tim Carpenter (born 1968): a calm, steady rhythm of 74 medium-format photographs made in the semirural American Midwest. While each picture records the seemingly random non-activity of a typical street view, Carpenter's meticulous composition and contemplative sequencing creates a harmony of natural and geometric motifs running quietly throughout the book, an interplay of minor chords that draws the viewer into this specific physical place (mostly central Illinois, where Carpenter grew up). Detached from the urgency of current affairs, stripped of all excess, the photographs reflect a poetic attempt to see 'the thing in itself,' to make meaning with the barest tools possible.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

'Nothing but Clouds' were the words used by the research commission in Andrey Tarkovsky's 1986 film 'Solaris' to deny video evidenced traces of alien life on the planet. Taking this disclaimer as the title, this meditative book by Kristina Jurotschkin brings together images, made in various places in Europe over numerous years, from her photographic archive. The result is a possible archive of the future of our present, or an archaeological survey anticipated for the future. Examining the construction of our social reality, Jurotschkin presents alienating views of everyday spaces.

Abstract

"Born in Antwerp in 1941, Harry Gruyaert was one of the first European photographers in the 1970s and 1980s to explore the creative potential of colour. Influenced by American photographers, as well as by cinema, his work defined new territory for colour photography ... A member of Magnum Photos since 1982, he has embraced the possibilities of digital photography in his most recent work, feeling that it allows him to take more risks and to capture light in a new way ... This volume, the first retrospective of his work, is an ... overview of his personal quest for freedom of expression and the liberation of the senses." --
