Abstract

The current literature regarding employment among persons with disabilities produces research results dependent on definitions of work disability, the discipline within which research takes places, the model or paradigm of disability in which the research is framed, the methodology and measures used and the cultural context in which employment occurs. This volume seeks to address those factors which have made describing, predicting and examining the work experience of a person with a disability both different and difficult. Contributors examine less frequently anaylzed aspects of employment for persons with disabilities, and offer a variety of approaches to the conceptualization of work, how they differ across cultures, organizations, and types of disability. Topics covered include examination of range of contextual framing of employment for those with disabilities, well-being, the impact of gender, poverty and education and the collection concludes by examining the future of employment developments and trends and the impacts on inclusion of people with disabilities in the paid workforce.

Abstract

The world of work is rapidly changing. What then do 21st century workplaces look like, and what factors are supporting these workplacechanges? Globalisation, financial and labour market deregulation, and rapid technological advances have accelerated workplace change and skillrequirements. Organisations, for example, need to increasingly managegeographically diverse and technologically-mediated workplace relationships.Advances in artificial intelligence and automation are further questioning thefuture and nature of work itself. This book identifies and examines theinstitutions, frameworks and technologies that are emerging to support thesenew work practices. It analyses changing work environments, entrepreneurial andself-employment strategies, global virtual labour markets and the impacts ofdata analytics and automation on work practices and skill sets. It is criticalfor governments, practitioners and academics to better understand how toharness the benefits and meet the challenges of these new organisationalworkplace practices. Further, it requires informed choices and decisions on thepart of individuals, as they seek to log on to work in the 21st century.

Abstract

This book studies a range of legal systems and compares them on their ability to deal with psychosocial risks at work. The book looks at prevention of psychosocial risks from a labor law perspective and at compensation and reparation from a social security law perspective. It pays special attention to the topic of bullying in the work place, which is currently the subject of most legal summons. This book presents the views on the subject from leading national and international experts and provides an in-depth coverage of legal systems used in Southern and Northern European countries, as well as Canada and Japan to deal with this topic. The topic of psychosocial risks at work has received much attention recently, both from the general public, the press, and those working in the legal arena. It is difficult for lawyers to deal with the issue of psychosocial risks at work due to the multifactorial and subjective features involved.

Abstract

In recent years, multinational corporations were increasingly engaged in the development of standardized global workplace models. For their implementation and feasibility, it is decisive as how these standards fit the diverse regional workplace cultures. This topic was pursued in the course of a research project, comparing established workplaces in Germany, USA and Japan against global workplace standards of multinational corporations. The analysis confirmed the expected differences among local workplaces and on the other hand a predominant mainstream among global corporate workplace standards. Conspicuous however, are the fundamental differences between local models and corporate standards. For the implementation of global standards in local context, this implies multiple challenges on cultural, organizational and spatial level. The analysis findings provide information for assessing current projects and pinpointing optimization measures. The analysis framework further provides a tool to uncover and assess needs and restrictions for the development of future workplace models. Abstract

The responsive global organization can adapt business operations across multinational markets in response to unpredictable changes in the turbulent global marketplace. This book deals with different aspects of the effective multinational corporation (MNC) pointing to new ways in which the MNC can enhance responsiveness faced with increasing market turbulence. Drawing on contemporary research in strategy and international business, the book considers relevant aspects including subsidiary autonomy, individual and team engagement, local knowledge, knowledge-based innovation, dynamic integrative processes, cross-cultural management, crisis handling, and the impact of abrupt events. The diversity of multinational business provides many opportunities, but also distinct challenges that must be managed effectively. Here an interactive dynamic between headquarters and local business units is driving responsiveness and adaptive behaviors. Corporate headquarters must structure a multinational organization so adaptive initiatives exploit local market insights where opportunities evolve from autonomous responses around the world. This can entail crisis responses involving both local and corporate efforts as a robust way to handle unexpected incidents. Such interactive approaches constitute a combination of central integration and decentralized local responses as the basis for a dynamic adaptive system. To make this work in a multinational context, we must consider the intricate interplay between corporate values and local cultures, and understand how leadership philosophies influence how diverse employees act as team players and global corporate citizens. The book provides relevant insights on all these important issues.

Abstract

With expanding globalisation, international enterprises exercise a growing influence on organizational culture in countries where they operate. Several dimensional frameworks exist to compare country cultures in a quantitative manner. The same is true for organizational cultures. Yet, until now, the paradigm has been that the two types of culture need to be measured by different frameworks. For years, this paradigm has been an obstacle for comparing work cultures internationally. In this book, author Paul Melessen presents a dimensional framework that bridges the gap between the two types of culture. It builds on existing frameworks ? in particular, the VSM and OCM frameworks presented by Geert Hofstede ? to compare fifteen multinational corporations and subsequently draw several interesting conclusions. Appropriately titled 'Countries, Corporations and Cultures', the book develops the ?Multilevel Culture? (MLC) framework with a procedure called MCMC multilevel modelling. Hence the subtitle 'A multilevel approach'.
