Abstract

Explores the interactions among literature, cultural studies, and the law through detailed analyses of select British modern writers including Oscar Wilde, Joseph Conrad, Ford Madox Ford, and James Joyce. By tracing the relationships between the literature, authors, media, and judicial procedure of the time, Barleben illuminates the somewhat macabre element of modern British trial process, which still enacts and re-enacts itself throughout contemporary judicial systems of the British Commonwealth. Using little seen legal documents, like Ford's contempt trial decision, Staging the Trials of Modernism uncovers the conversations between the interior style of British Modern authors and the ways in which law began rethinking concepts like intent and the subconscious. Barleben's fresh insights offer a nuanced look into the ways in which law influences literary production.

Abstract

*Selected as one of openDemocracy's Best Political Books of 2017* Whatever happened to the student revolt? In 2010 young people across Britain took to the streets to defy a wave of government attacks on education, increasing tuition fees, and cuts to grants for college students. Months of occupations, kettling and outbreaks of violence ensued, but to what effect? Today, students face new attacks on higher education from the current Conservative government. Student Revolt tells the story of the year that introduced a generation to the power of mass movement, through the voices of the people involved. Activists', students', university-occupiers', young workers' and politicians' testimonies are woven together to create a narrative which starkly captures both the deep divisions as well as the intense energy that sprung from its actors. The 'Millbank Generation' has since moved on - some fell into political inactivity - but many went on to explore different forms of politics, where they continue to fight. This book will provide a poignant reminder of the revolt for today's activists, as well as an opportunity to reflect on its many lessons. Published in partnership with the Left Book Club

Abstract

One of the biggest political stories of the past few decades in the United Kingdom and elsewhere has been the growing divide between the working class and the mainstream liberal left, which historically has spoken for them. This book offers a close analysis of that phenomenon by showing how the political scene looks to underemployed white men who have seen their standards of living fall in recent years even as their communities have fractured around them. Rather than cast aspersions or mount arguments about the larger success of society as a whole, 'The Rise of the Right' takes these men and their concerns seriously, showing where their opinions are factually wrong but arguing powerfully that liberal politics must find a way of acknowledging and addressing their legitimate fears and frustrations.

Abstract

This book discusses and analyses the ways in which fatherhood is in transition in contemporary and globalized society. The authors identify and examine fathering practices in relation to hegemonic and marginal patterns of masculinity, the concept of heteronormativity and sexuality, and patterns of segregation, class and national differences. Contextualised in relation to theories of fatherhood and relevant statistics, Fatherhood in Transition presents rich empirical material gathered in a number of western countries. It focuses on key themes including transnational fathering and families, gay fathers and the virtual global arena of fatherhood images found on the internet. Containing a number of new discussions about masculinity and fatherhood, whilst contributing to and developing existing debates and theories about men, masculinity, gender and society, this book will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines, including Men’s Studies, Gender Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Media Studies and Cultural Studies.

Abstract

‘As a Bond scholar and fan, this book opened my eyes to new ways of understanding the Bond films. Funnell and Dodds, both renowned scholars in their own fields, have combined disciplinary perspectives to provide an insightful and highly original analysis of the Bond franchise. This is a very welcome addition to the world of Bond scholarship that will also be valuable for students of geopolitics, gender and cultural studies.’ - James R. Chapman, Professor of Film Studies, University of Leicester, UK. ‘This book constitutes a significant, well-argued and accessible addition to the field of Bond scholarship, demonstrating a high level of research and discussion. The authors’ approach and methodology offer a fresh and relevant perspective on the subject that will interest both the academic and general reader.’ - Daniel O'Brien, Film tutor in Medical Humanities, University of Southampton, UK. ‘Brilliantly perceptive and beautifully written – Geographies, Genders, and Geopolitics of James Bond is a remarkable achievement. Funnell and Dodds develop a unique and highly original intersectional reading of Bond’s globe-trotting adventures, which are shown to reflect, reproduce, and disrupt dominant geopolitical and affective imaginaries over time. Not only will you never see Bond the same way again – this book will challenge your preconceptions about the relationship between geopolitics, security, and popular culture’ - Nick Vaughan-Williams, Professor of International Security, University of Warwick, UK. ‘With so many books about James Bond treading the same tired ground, does the world need another Bond related book? The answer is a resounding YES! Funnell and Dodds have produced one of the most original studies of how Bond has changed the world landscape. It is scholarly yet accessible for anyone wanting to know more about Bond’s relationship to gender and geopolitics. For those teaching a class on Bond, you now have an additional textbook that helps us understand the meaning of Bond today. Drink a martini, have a seat, and enjoy Geographies, Genders, and Geopolitics of James Bond!’ - Robert G. Weiner, Popular Culture Librarian Texas Tech University, UK. This book discusses the physical and political geographies of the Bond film franchise and how they inform our reading of 007 as a hero. To survive and succeed in a dangerous world, Bond has to feel, move and think his way through and past threats and dangers. This account is a truly immersive journey into Bond’s worlds. Lisa Funnell is Assistant Professor in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at the University of Oklahoma, USA. Klaus Dodds is Professor of Geopolitics at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK. .

Abstract

There is increasing interest in the 'home front' during the Second World War, including issues such as how people coped with rationing, how women worked to contribute to the war effort, and how civilian morale fluctuated over time. Most studies on this subject are confined to Britain, or to a single other colonial territory, neglecting the fact that Britain controlled a large Empire and that there were numerous "home fronts", each of which contributed greatly to the war effort but each in slightly different ways. This book considers "home fronts" from an overall imperial perspective and in a broad array of territories - Australia, Canada, India, South Africa and New Zealand as well as Britain. It examines many aspects of wartime life - food, communications, bombing, volunteering, internment and more, and discusses important themes including identity, gender, inequality, and the relationship between civilians and the state. Besides case studies outlining the detail of the situation in different territories and in different areas of life, the book assesses "home fronts" across the Empire in a comprehensive way, setting the case studies in their wider context, and placing the subject in, and advancing, the historiography.
