Of all European landscapes and regions, the Rhine is one of the most heavily overlaid with cultural and political meaning. Cradle of Romanticism, tourism, and the picturesque, bone of contention between the German and French spheres of cultural and geopolitical influence, the Rhine has attracted armies, artists, activists and tourists for centuries and has featured prominently the key writings of Europe?s literary and intellectual history from Byron to Lucien Febvre. This volume brings together eminent literary and cultural historians to present materials and analyses from various of the central nexus of European culture. The volume also contains a unique and comprehensive anthology of key texts (historical, poetical and polemical) related to the Rhineland and its contested position.

This book provides insight into the project 'OUI Biomasse' by summarising selected results. The major goal was the development of a knowledge-based sustainable biomass strategy for the transition of the energy system of the Upper Rhine Region. The 'OUI Biomasse' network studied all aspects of the biomass value chain to come up with development scenarios, analyse their potential impact in terms of sustainability criteria and to draft guidelines for the sustainable use of biomass.

This study examines public opinion in the Napoleonic era in the area between Rhine and Maas (1810–1814). Pierre Horne uses a transnational approach to analyze local approval and rejection of the Napoleonic régime, thereby making a major contribution to reconciling French, German, Belgian, and Luxembourgian historiography. À en croire nombre d’essayistes du XIXe siècle, c’est l’opinion publique, et elle seule, qui aurait fait tomber du trône l’homme qui l’a confondue avec sa propre ambition. La « reine du monde » a-t-elle cessé de soutenir Napoléon, le fossoyeur et le continuateur de la Révolution, provoquant la chute du régime façonné par et pour lui? Déjà complexe, cette question devient même controversée dès lors que l’on porte le regard en direction des territoires conquis en 1794 par les armées révolutionnaires, puis annexés au vaste Empire français. Les Belges, les Rhénans et les Luxembourgeois vivant sous les lois de la France napoléonienne étaient-ils en voie d’être politiquement et culturellement assimilés lorsqu’une conjoncture défavorable est venue mettre un frein à cette évolution? L’historien du XXIe siècle a beau éviter de poser le problème en ces termes, deux siècles de bataille idéologique autour des acquis de la Révolution française ou de l’existence de prétendus sentiments nationaux ne laissent planer aucun doute sur le fait que même les plus consensuelles des thèses relatives à l’opinion publique devront passer devant un véhément tribunal, héritier de bien des croyances nationales. L’écriture dépassionnée de l’histoire d’un objet aussi insaisissable à une époque aussi tourmentée ne pouvait dès lors être entreprise qu’à la faveur d’un cadre de recherche franco-allemand et à la lumière d’une étude transnationale également ouest-européenne.

Anhand der Fallbeispiele »Vision Rheintal« und »Agglomerationsprogramm Rheintal« im Alpenrheintal diskutiert und vergleicht Stefan Obkircher Steuerungs- und Planungsverständnisse in dieser zwischenstädtischen Grenzregion. Dem gegenüber wird eine vertiefende Betrachtung der »Bottom-up-Raumbilder« gestellt, in deren Fokus die Handlungs- und die Wahrnehmungsebene der Bewohner_innen stehen. Mit Methoden wie Mental Mapping und Photobefragung liefert die Studie so nicht nur ein umfassendes Raumbild der Grenzregion, sondern ebenso praxisrelevante Schlussfolgerungen für die Raumentwicklung. »[Es] liegt eine Veröffentlichung vor, die Grenzraumforschern, Planern, Praktikern sowie gerade auch Politikern sehr empfohlen sei, um sich multiperspektivisch komplexen Herausforderungen im 21.
