This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book investigates what international placements of healthcare employees in low resource settings add to the UK workforce and the efficacy of the its national health system. The authors present empirical data collected from a volunteer deployment project in Uganda focused on reducing maternal and new-born mortality and discuss the learning and experiential outcomes for UK health care professionals acting as long term volunteers in low resource settings. They also develop a model for structured placement that offers optimal learning and experiential outcomes and minimizes risk, while shedding new light on the role that international placements play as part of continuing professional development both in the UK and in other sending countries.

Das frühhellenistische Mausoleum von Belevi liegt 14 km nordöstlich von Ephesos. Über einem massiven quadratischen Sockelgeschoss mit monumentalen Ausmaßen thront eine korinthische Peristasis. Nach der Vorlage einer Monographie aus dem Jahr 1979, bei der wesentliche Teile der Rekonstruktion als noch nicht geklärt betrachtet werden mussten, ermöglichte nunmehr ein Forschungsprojekt der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften mit Unterstützung des Österreichischen Archäologischen Instituts eine präzise Neuaufnahme und gesicherte Rekonstruktion des Monuments. Im Sockelgeschoss ließen sich dessen Höhe und sein raffinierter Schichtaufbau, die Gestaltung der ionischen Scheintür und der Aufbau der Grabkammer klären. Zweifelsfrei belegen ließ sich die Anlage des Obergeschosses mit einer Peristasis und einem Dach, das nach innen zum offenen, ungenutzten Hof hin entwässerte. Bemerkenswert ist die außergewöhnliche Blendarchitektur vor der Nordwand. Ein bedeutender Teil der Arbeit ist der Bautechnik gewidmet. Neuerungen wie der intensive Einsatz von Gussmörtel und die Verfeinerung von Versatz- und Verdübelungstechniken kamen zur Anwendung. Der modular durchkomponierte Entwurf des Monuments folgte einfachen und klaren Proportionen. Zahlreiche optische Verfeinerungen bereicherten die Gestaltung. Die von Lykien und Karien übernommene Grundform des Mausoleumtyps wurde mit lokalen, orientalischen, makedonischen und mutterländischen Elementen bereichert, mit Neuerungen versehen und zu einem eigenständigen Ganzen geformt. Der Projektteil Bauforschung wurde großteils durch den Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung finanziert und mit seiner Unterstützung gedruckt.

This book puts forward an original approach to Europeanization in a global context. Following the world polity approach, the author establishes the missing link between global, European and domestic realms and reveals the multiplicity of dynamics and logics driving the reform process in European Union candidate countries. A range of other topics are investigated, including whether Europeanization is only driven by parochial strategic interests or by broader normative concerns and how we can make sense of the selectivity in domestic compliance with the EU without succumbing to binary thinking. Focusing on the critical case of Turkey, the book puts forward three varieties of Europeanization: strategic, normative and ritualized, which underlie the complex dynamics that drive the reform processes in EU candidate countries. It will be of interest to scholars and students with an interest in Sociology, Political Science, International Relations, Globalization, Europeanization, European Studies and Turkish Studies.

Did an invasion of the Sea Peoples cause the collapse of the Late Bronze Age palace-based economies of the Levant, as well as of the Hittite Empire? Renewed excavations at Tell Tayinat in southeast Turkey are shedding new light on the critical transitional phase of the Late Bronze/Early Iron Age (ca. 1200–1000 B.C.), a period that in the Northern Levant has until recently been considered a “Dark Age,” due in large part to the few extant textual sources relating to its history. However, recently discovered epigraphic data from both the site and the surrounding region suggest the formation of an Early Iron Age kingdom that fused Hieroglyphic Luwian monumental script with a strong component of Aegeanizing cultural elements. The capital of this putative/erstwhile kingdom appears to have been located at Tell Tayinat in the Amuq Valley. More specifically, this formal stylistic analysis examines a distinctive painted pottery known as Late Helladic IIIC found at the site of Tayinat during several seasons of excavation. The assemblage includes examples of Aegean-style bowls, kraters, and amphorae bearing an array of distinctive decorative features. A key objective of the study distinguishes Aegean stylistic characteristics both in form and in painted motifs from those inspired by the indigenous culture. Drawing on a wide range of parallels from Philistia through the Levant, Anatolia, the Aegean Sea, the Greek Mainland, and Cyprus, this research begins to fill a longstanding lacuna in the Amuq Valley and attempts to correlate with major historical and cultural trends in the Northern Levant and beyond.
