Abstract

Liban. In Liban. Mémoires fragmentées d’une guerre obsédante , Calargé focuses attention on the ways in which Francophone artists, writers, and filmmakers have revived the collective memory of the (un)civil war that ravaged Lebanon between 1975 and 1990. Their works both defy and critique the politics of forgetting that was actively pursued by the post-war leadership and attempt to fill a gaping void in the country’s national historical narrative. Nonetheless, such efforts are necessarily limited. They are limited by both the persistent feeling that the war is not (yet) over and by the limits of personal narratives in the absence of a national project that ensures and facilitates a collective memorialization of the war.

Abstract

This book offers a novel approach to understanding violence and violent conflict using complexity and network theories, borrowed from the natural sciences, together with social network analysis. Because violence is both a universal and central component of human communication and identity formation, it has a fundamental function in shaping social behavior. Using Manuel Castells’ work on the programming of social networks, this book explores the Lebanese Civil War and the ongoing war in Afghanistan under the perspective of violence within networks. The approach presents a unique and compelling argument that counters the long-held assumption that war is caused by specific events, or is the unavoidable culmination of existing conditions or grievances. Rather, this book argues that violence emerges when the structure of social networks becomes too rigid and hierarchic to adapt to stresses and challenges that materialize on a constant basis from both within and without the network. This is important not only for the study of war, but as a method of improving the success of contemporary peace building efforts.

Abstract

This book provides an intimate picture of Lebanon, exploring the impacts of the Arab uprisings of 2011 which are deeply affecting Lebanese politics and society. The book examines Lebanon’s current issues and its deep sectarian divisions, as well as the ways in which it still seems able to find some adaptation paths to face the many challenges left by its regional sectarian and political polarization. Authors delve into border regions, Syrian refugees, the welfare state, the Lebanese Army, popular mobilisations in 2011 and the two main communities, the Sunnis and the Shia. Built on various fieldwork researches, the volume explores each of the topics through the lenses of identification building processes, the re-ordering of social and/or political relations, and the nationhood symbols and meanings.  Rosita Di Peri is Lecturer in Political Science & International Relations in the Department of Culture, Politics and Society at the University of Torino, Italy. She has published in ‘Rivista Italiana di Politiche Pubbliche’, ‘Rivista Italiana di Scienza Politica’, ‘Politics Religion and Ideology’, 'The British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies’ and ‘Oriente Moderno’.   Daniel Meier is Research fellow at CNRS, Grenoble, France, in the EUborderscapes Research Programme and teaches at the University of Geneva. His research interest focuses on border and identity issues in the Middle East. He recently published Shaping Lebanon’s Borderlands. Abstract

This book examines the coalitions and relationships within the power centers of Shi'ite politics during the era of political feudalism in Lebanon. The author maps the Shi'ite leadership and its inter-connections, including the alliances and rivalry between prominent Zu'ama, clans, and Ulama' from the formation of Lebanon in 1920 to the decline of old Shi'ite politics and the emergence of popular movements in the 1970s. The work also explains the role of prominent intellectuals within these power centers. Omri Nir is a leading scholar of Lebanese history and politics and is a lecturer at the Departments of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv University, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and Achva College, Israel. He is often interviewed on Lebanese issues in Israeli, international, and Arab media. He has published numerous articles and is the author of Nabih Berri and Lebanese Politics.

Abstract

Lebanon and Israel/Palestine are two political entities that expanded in 1920 and 1967 respectively, and became divided societies characterized by periods of stability and conflict. This book provides the first detailed comparison between the two states and also explores the effects of their expansion on their changing relations. It looks first at how both expanded states attempted to cope with their predicaments, focusing on the relationship between state, community and security, before moving on to analyze the de-stabilizing effects of expansion on Israeli-Lebanese relations. The book draws on previously unpublished official documents, memoirs, media resources and films produced in Lebanon and Israel/Palestine, in addition to existing works on the two states and the Middle East. Bridging the gap between comparative politics and international relations, it will interest students of Lebanon and Israel/Palestine, the Middle East, and conflict and peace.

Abstract

This book offers a fresh perspective on the impact of the US intervention in Lebanon in 1982 and the decision-making drivers that led the Reagan Administration into the Lebanese Civil War. Based on newly released archival materials from high level Washington officials such as President Reagan, Secretary of State Shultz and Secretary of Defense Weinberger, it argues that the failure of the Reagan Administration to accurately understand the complex political landscape of the Lebanese Civil War resulted in the US-led Multinational Force becoming militarily intertwined in the conflict. This book challenges the notion that Reagan deployed US Marines under the ideals of international peacekeeping, asserting that the US Administration hoped that the Multinational Force would create the political capital that Reagan needed to strengthen the US’ position both in the Middle East and globally. Ultimately, the peacemakers were forced to withdraw as they evolved into antagonists. A case study in the foreign policy doctrines of key Washington decision-makers throughout the 1980s, this project is perfect for any International Relations scholar or interested reader seeking to understand the links between the mistakes of the Reagan Administration and contemporary US interventions in the Middle East.
