Abstract

Das vorliegende Buch dient künftigen und bereits praktizierenden Laserschutzbeauftragten als kompaktes Nachschlagewerk und bietet Hilfestellung bei praktischen sowie theoretischen Fragen im Umgang mit Lasern in allen Anwendungsbereichen. Durch konkrete Übungsaufgaben und Testfragen mit Lösungen in jedem Kapitel eignet es sich als begleitendes Lehrbuch für die Aus- und Weiterbildung von Laserschutzbeauftragten bzw. als Ergänzung zu den entsprechenden Kursen. Das Werk basiert dabei auf den Anforderungen der Arbeitsschutzverordnung OStrV und der Technischen Regeln Optische Strahlung (TROS-Laserstrahlung), die diese konkretisieren. Abstract

The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Abstract

The aim of the book is to provide an introduction to radiation, the physics mechanisms behind particle detectors, and the exploitation of those mechanisms in actual devices, including the combination of different detectors in an experimental apparatus. The understanding of each of these areas and their interplay is considered crucial and therefore much attention is given in the book to define and explain the language and the basic principles with very few assumptions. The mathematical formalism is kept to a minimum, but simple derivations are presented in order to guide the reasoning and understanding of the working principles. The first five chapters are dedicated to radiation: it is presented starting with an overview of particles and forces and an extended review of the most common natural and man-made sources of radiation, including an introduction to particle accelerators. Particular attention is paid to real life examples, which place the types of radiation and their energy in context. Dosimetry is presented from a modern, user-led point of view, and relativistic kinematics is introduced to give the basic knowledge needed to handle the more formal aspects of radiation dynamics and interaction. The explanation of the physics principles of interaction between radiation and matter is given significant space to allow a deeper understanding of the various technologies based on those principles. Chapter 6 is dedicated to the ionization mechanism, which forms the basi s of gaseous (chapter 7), semiconductors (chapter 8) and, in some sense, scintillation (chapter 9) detectors. Chapter 10 covers a number of additional phenomena, including multiple scattering, bremsstrahlung, Compton scattering, pair production, Cherenkov and transition radiation. Chapters 12 and 13 are again dedicated to technologies, those of calorimeters and neutrino detectors, respectively. An introduction to statistics and probability distributions is presented in Appendix. Throughout the book, the mathematical formalism is kept to a minimum, but simple derivations are presented in order to guide the reasoning and understanding of the working principles. Examples are presented regularly. This book will be of interest to undergraduate students, graduate students and readers wishing to become aware of how radiation and its exploitation are becoming more and more relevant in the modern world.

Abstract

This book presents new information on radiobiology that more clearly refutes the linear no-threshold (LNT) assumption and supports radiation hormesis. Fresh light is cast on the mechanisms of radiation hormesis and the potential benefits of low-dose ionizing radiation in preventing and treating a wide variety of inflammatory and proliferative diseases. It is proposed that these effects may derive from cellular communication via electromagnetic waves directed by DNA, with each cell acting as a quantum computer. Abstract

This book is published open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book summarizes presentations and discussions from the two-day international workshop held at UC Berkeley in March 2015, and derives questions to be addressed in multi-disciplinary research toward a new paradigm of nuclear safety. The consequences of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in March 2011 have fuelled the debate on nuclear safety: while there were no casualties due to radiation, there was substantial damage to local communities. The lack of common understanding of the basics of environmental and radiological sciences has made it difficult for stakeholders to develop effective strategies to accelerate recovery, and this is compounded by a lack of effective decision-making due to the eroded public trust in the government and operators. Recognizing that making a society resilient and achieving higher levels of saf ety relies on public participation in and feedback on decision-making, the book focuses on risk perception and mitigation in its discussion of the development of resilient communities.

Abstract

These proceedings present the latest information on software reliability, industrial safety, cyber security, physical protection, testing and verification for nuclear power plants. The papers were selected from more than 80 submissions and presented at the First International Symposium on Software Reliability, Industrial Safety, Cyber Security and Physical Protection for Nuclear Power Plants, held in Shanghai, China on December 10–14, 2015. The primary aim of this symposium was to provide a platform to facilitate the discussion for comprehension, application and management of digital instrumentation, control systems and technologies in nuclear power plants. The book reflects not only the state of the art and latest trends in nuclear instrumentation and control system technologies, but also China’s increasing influence in this area.
