Fully illustrated in colour, here is the first introduction in English to one of Korea's outstanding cultural assets - the banchado ('painting of the order of guests at a royal event') - relating to all those taking part (1800 people) in the eight-day royal procession to Hwaseong (Gyeonggi Province) organized by King Jeongjo in 1795 for the dual purpose of visiting his father's tomb and celebrating his mother's sixtieth birthday. The banchado is a fine example of the meticulous record-keeping of the period (known as uigwe - the subject-matter of this book being known as the Wonhaeng eulmyo jeongni uigwe) and the skills of the court artists at that time. In addition to the banchado illustrations, the Wonhaeng eulmyo jeongni uigwe contains extensive lists of all the participants in the procession, details of the workers and technicians involved, including their duties and wages. It even includes the different foods offered at meal-times, the quantity of ingredients and the costs. The author provides a full analysis of the context, planning, execution and significance of the event.

De Stille Omgang is een goed bewaard Amsterdams geheim. Het is een religieus ritueel dat al eeuwenlang eenmaal per jaar door de binnenstad van Amsterdam trekt. Velen hebben ervan gehoord, en wie het massale ritueel daadwerkelijk heeft meegemaakt of is tegengekomen raakt erdoor gefascineerd. De tocht vindt plaats ter herdenking en verering van een mirakel dat in 1345 in de Kalverstraat zou hebben plaatsgevonden. Ter nagedachtenis hieraan bouwden de stedelingen een fraaie kapel, de Heilige Stede. De toen nog jonge stad Amsterdam ontwikkelde zich daardoor tot een bedevaartsoord waar pelgrims uit heel Europa op afkwamen. Deze 'biografie' van een intrigerende devotie - de Mirakelcultus - vertelt over de langdurige interactie tussen heiligdom, pelgrims, stad, natie, en de twisten die daarmee gepaard gingen. De katholieken kwamen daar uiteindelijk triomferend uit naar voren. Ze creëerden een 'nationale' omgang, waarmee ze hun herwonnen positie markeerden. Under what conditions does in-group pride facilitate out-group tolerance? What are the causal linkages between intergroup tolerance and socialization in religious rituals? This book examines how Muslims from Russia's North Caucuses returned from the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca both more devout as Muslims and more tolerant of out-groups. Drawing on prominent theories of identity and social capital, the authors resolve seeming contradictions between the two literatures by showing the effects of religious rituals that highlight within-group diversity at the same time that they affirm the group's common identity. This theory is then applied to explain why social integration of Muslim immigrants has been more successful in the USA than in Europe and how the largest Hispanic association in the US defied the clash of civilizations theory by promoting immigrants' integration into America's social mainstream. The book offers insights into Islam's role in society and politics and the interrelationships between religious faith, immigration and ethnic identity, and tolerance that will be relevant to both scholars and practitioners.
