Cet ouvrage adopte une approche centrée sur les acteurs pour évoquer la vie de jeunes bruxellois de quartiers défavorisés. Il s'intéresse non à ceux qui subissent le plus les ségrégations et les relégations mais à ceux qui peuvent être considérés comme en réussite scolaire. En prenant pour objet un groupe assez peu étudié en sociologie, le livre contribue aux débats relatifs aux fragmentations des jeunesses urbaines. Il analyse les positionnements de jeunes de quartiers défavorisés en réussite scolaire sur plusieurs dimensions - urbaines, sociales, ethniques et scolaires - et met en lumière à la fois la dualisation de la ville et une forme de dualisation qui apparaît dans ces quartiers, encore trop souvent appréhendés à partir d'une vision relativement homogénéisante. En questionnant le rapport à la ville, mais également la relation aux origines sociales et ethniques ou encore les identités scolaires des jeunes de quartiers populaires en réussite scolaire, cet ouvrage souligne la diversité de leurs quartiers et met en évidence un processus de différenciation entre les catégories de jeunes qui y habitent. Le prisme ethnique et scolaire se retrouve au centre de ce processus. Le groupe mis à distance est décrit comme en majorité d'origine maghrébine, en échec scolaire, souvent délinquant et très présent dans l'espace urbain. Cette description est faite par l'ensemble des jeunes en réussite rencontrés, y compris par ceux qui partagent l'origine sociale et ethnique du groupe stigmatisé. La reproduction des stéréotypes relatifs au groupe mis à distance et la volonté d'affranchissement par rapport aux stigmatisations sont rendues nécessaires par la proximité sociale et urbaine entre les jeunes en réussite scolaire et les groupes plus relégués - qui n'ont pas l'opportunité de se détacher du stigmate. Parce qu'il prend en compte certaines dimensions liées à l'ethnicité, ce livre apporte un complément à la littérature consacrée aux jeunes de quartiers défavorisés, qui se limite le plus souvent à traiter les dimensions territoriales et sociales. Cet éclairage permet non seulement de lutter contre les stéréotypes relatifs aux jeunes de quartiers défavorisés, mais aussi de donner des clés et des leviers aux acteurs de terrain pour lutter contre les différenciations entre jeunesses urbaines ; différenciations qui contribuent à la relégation et à la stigmatisation des jeunes les plus précaires dans les quartiers populaires.
