Over the past two decades Frieke Janssens has built a solid reputation in staged photography. Her visual language is both surprising and playful and reveals a great sense of humor. It is often redolent with tension and her works exude an unspoken, tragic undercurrent. Janssens' images are sumptuously beautiful, but touch upon subjects that aren't: death, smoking, drinking, and the battle between the sexes. This combination of taboo and pure aestheticism marks her style, hence: The Sweetest Taboo.

On the occasion of a big solo exhibition of Danielle van Zadelhoff, her photographs were collected in a luxurious art book published by Stockmans. The book is filled with 127 full colour pictures in a black background to make the images pop out even more, printed in Staccato screening. The reproduction process on luxury paper, the use of intense black and the fragility of the photos necessitate the use of gloves, which are included with the book. They protect the images and simultaneously create a sort of ritual for experiencing the artist’s work. About the artist: Danielle van Zadelhoff started with contemporary photography in 2013 and from the very beginning her work leaves a profound impression. She catches the light, has a great eye for detail and works with intimate poses. During shoots she discusses the poses with the models, but mostly leaves them free to decide how to position themselves. This has a disarming effect but most importantly, it makes the poses feel real and the emotions appear natural. Her work is often compared to that of the old masters from the renaissance, yet despite van Zadelhoff’s use of the chiaroscuro effect, her images have a distinct contemporary feel to them. She captures the Zeitgeist with contemporary images that have a sense of stillness and are devoid of noise. They invite you to have a moment of deep inner reflection.

This publication accompanies Fondation Beyeler's survey on the great photographic innovator Wolfgang Tillmans (born 1968). Tillmans first made a name for himself in the early 1990s, with photographs that captured an entire generation and a youth culture of which he was part, and which are now iconic images of that era. However, he quickly expanded his focus, creating works with and without a camera, producing photographs printed as C-prints on photographic paper, as inkjet prints on paper, or as photocopies. Some of these photographs acquire a sculptural, objectlike quality. Tillmans has also developed new compositional and formal, anti-hierarchical ways of installing his pictures in spaces. This substantial volume offers a comprehensive overview of his achievements.

Published on the occasion of a retrospective exhibition curated by Pauline Vermare of work by Saul Leiter at the Bunkamura Museum of Art in Tokyo, this sincere, beautifully conceived volume offers an in-depth look at this American visual artist’s oeuvre. Known for his photography and painting, a rare and beautiful combination of Japanese and French influences runs through Leiter’s entire body of work. His passion for French impressionism and post-impressionism likely played a role in his love and admiration for Japanese art, leading to the characteristic poetic grace and delicateness seen in his images, as well as an acute awareness of transient, ephemeral beauty.

Peter Hujar was a leading figure of the downtown New York scene of the 1970s and '80s. He is most well-known for his portraits of New York City's artists, musicians, writers, and performers, which feature characters such as Susan Sontag, William S. Burroughs, David Wojnarowicz, and Andy Warhol, and was admired for his completely uncompromising attitude toward work and life. Hujar was a consummate technician, and his portraits of people, animals, and landscapes, with their exquisite black-and-white tonalities, were extremely influential. Underappreciated during his lifetime, Hujar is now a revered icon of the lost downtown art scene, and his photographs are held in permanent collections around the world. Over 160 photographs are gathered in Peter Hujar: Speed of Life. Published alongside a major touring exhibition, this collection presents Hujar's famous portraiture as well as his lesser-known projects.
