This collection of essays examines the various dynamic processes by which texts are preserved, transmitted, and modified in medieval multi-text codices, focusing on the meanings generated by new contexts and the possible reader experiences provoked by novel configurations and material presentation. Containing essays on text collections from many different European countries and in a wide range of medieval languages, this volume sheds new light on common trends and regional differences in the history of book production and reading practices.

"Il Livero de l'abbecho" and the "Primo amastramento de l'arte de la geometria," preserved in MS. Riccardiano 2404, are basically ancient translations of Fibonacci's Liber abaci (1226), written down at the dawn of the XIV century in the dialect of Perugia. The translation reflects the effort (and the problems) of transferring the words and the techniques discussed in the grand book of Fibonacci into a vernacular language [and] represents the actual foundation of a practical (thus vernacular) mathematics primarily devoted to resolving problems in managing a commercial firm and its bookkeeping. The book includes an introduction to the codicological and paleographical situation of the Livero, the conventions adopted in the manuscript, and the textual choices operated. In the second volume a detailed linguistic analysis is proposed.

De nombreux acteurs interviennent dans la confection du livre manuscrit au Moyen Âge (copistes, enlumineurs, relieurs, etc). Le présent volume s’attache à en étudier quelques uns et à montrer toute la complexité de certaines pratiques «artisanales» reliées à ces livres divers et variés (universitaires, liturgiques, et autres), de l’art d’enluminer à l’examen minutieux des reliures romanes, de l’usage de la pecia en Angleterre jusqu’à la production de livres enluminés dans les pays tchèques.
