The thirteenth edition continues to explore the role of and need for automated and precise control systems in green engineering. Key examples of green engineering, such as wind turbine control and the modelling of a photovoltaic generator to achieve maximum power delivery, are discussed in detail. The text is organised around the concept of control systems theory in the context of frequency and time domains.

Rapid corrective actions, termed automatic postural responses, are essential to counter the destabilizing effect of mechanical perturbations during natural behaviors. Previous research has demonstrated that automatic postural responses of the limbs and body share a number of capabilities in adapting to the prevailing circumstances and these abilities reflect contributions from multiple supraspinal pathways, including brainstem nuclei, basal ganglia, and primary motor cortex. However, we do not know the context-dependent contribution from specific generators, whether different neural pathways have a common role across different effectors, and how sensory and central deficits in one pathway are accommodated by those remaining. Bridging these gaps is essential to integrate the diverse set of studies, develop general theories of motor control, and explicate how the nervous system addresses the partially distinct behavioral demands of co-evolved effector system. The considerable flexibility and multiple interacting pathways of automatic postural responses also make it ideal for understanding how powerful formal theories, like optimal feedback control, are achieved by a distributed hierarchical neural network.

Het nieuwe boek Innovatief onderwijsontwerpen laat zien hoe vanuit het 4CID-model complexe taken in het onderwijs effectief gemaakt kunnen worden. Deze wetenschappelijk onderbouwde methode wordt in steeds meer instellingen die hun onderwijs beroepsgerichter willen (her)ontwerpen toegepast. Waarom kiezen voor Innovatief onderwijs ontwerpen? • methodiek verbindt de theorie en de praktijk onlosmakelijk met elkaar • praktische voorbeelden verduidelijken de toepassing van het model • helder en overzichtelijk gestructureerd Innovatief onderwijs ontwerpen legt aan de hand van heldere voorbeelden uit wat de principes van het 4CID-model zijn en hoe deze toegepast kunnen worden om tot een integraal ontwerp voor een onderwijs-programma te komen. De principes bestaan uit het ontwerpen van leertaken, beoordelingsinstrumenten, de volgorde van leertaken in het onderwijsprogramma, ondersteunende informatie, procedurele informatie en deeltaakoefening. Innovatief onderwijs ontwerpen richt zich op studenten en docenten die betrokken zijn bij het ontwerpen of herontwerpen van onderwijs, bijvoorbeeld bij onderwijskunde en lerarenopleidingen.
