While eighteenth-century efforts to standardize the English language have long been studied--from Samuel Johnson's Dictionary to grammar and elocution books of the period--less well-known are the era's popular collections of odd slang, criminal argots, provincial dialects, and nautical jargon. Strange Vernaculars delves into how these published works presented the supposed lexicons of the "common people" and traces the ways that these languages, once shunned and associated with outsiders, became objects of fascination in printed glossaries--from The New Canting Dictionary to Francis Grose's Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue--and in novels, poems, and songs, including works by Daniel Defoe, John Gay, Samuel Richardson, Robert Burns, and others. Janet Sorensen argues that the recognition and recovery of outsider languages was part of a transition in the eighteenth century from an aristocratic, exclusive body politic to a British national community based on the rhetoric of inclusion and liberty, as well as the revaluing of a common British past. These representations of the vernacular made room for the "common people" within national culture, but only after representing their language as "strange." Such strange and estranged languages, even or especially in their obscurity, came to be claimed as British, making for complex imaginings of the nation and those who composed it.

This book offers an original treatment of the Italian clitic si. Sharply separating encoded grammar from inference in discourse, it proposes a unitary meaning for si, including impersonals, passives, and reflexives. Si signals third-person participancy but makes no distinctions of number, gender, or case role. The analysis advances the Columbia School framework by relying on just these straightforward oppositions, attributing variety of interpretation largely to language use rather than to grammar. The analysis places si within a network of oppositions involving all the other clitics. Data come primarily from twentieth-century and more recent published and on-line literature. The book will be of interest to functional linguists, students of reflexivity, and scholars of the Italian language.

Cet ouvrage est le volume de présentation du projet "PatRom (Patronymica Romanica - Dictionnaire historique de l'anthroponyme romane)" qui réunit 18 groupes de recherche des différents pays romans d'Europe ainsi que d'Allemagne (Université de Trèves/Trier) et dont le but est de publier en l'an 2000 un dictionnaire historique des noms de personne et de famille romans d'origine délexicale. Le présent volume se propose de faire connaître au public scientifique la conception, la structure et les méthodes du dictionnaire en préparation. Le corps du volume comporte 47 articles (par ex. *PETTITUS, *RETUNDUS, VETULUS) dont les représentants des étymons choisis comme lemmes se sont fixés dans le stock onomastique des différents pays romans (cat./occ./fr. Petit, Lepetit, Pittet, Petitbon, ..., cast./it./roum. Redondo, Rotondo, Ratund ..., cast./fr./it./roum. Viejo, Vieil, Vieux, Veglio, Vecchio, Vechi ...). Ces articles, rédigés par 16 romanistes de 8 pays à partir des synthèses régionales et nationales des différents groupes des recherche, se signalent par leur richesse documentaire et leur rigueur explicative. Outre la productivité onomastique des différents étymons traités, ils mettent aussi en évidence leur productivité lexicale à l'intérieur de la Romania. Les données onomastiques anciennes permettent d'antédater un certain nombre de lexèmes romans et l'analyse de mieux en établir les bases étymologiques. Une substantielle introduction retrace l'historique du projet et en explicite les buts, la structure et les méthodes. L'ouvrage se termine par quatre index (onomastique, des lexèmes anthroponymisés, morphologique et sémantico-motivationnel) d'essai, à partir de trois articles du volume.
